Tidal vs Spotify
« on: July 04, 2023, 11:52:00 AM »
I been subscribed to spotify for the past few years and it has been amazing. I have heard so many albums i wouldnt have otherwise heard. Its been (as LMJ might say) a musical journey.

I decided to give Tidal a go, as i got a free 30 day trial.....which became 60 days, by paying only £2. Anyhoo, I am blown away by the dfference in quality of sound. Basically, Spotify streams at 160kbps......Tidal is 1440kbps. Basically it is CD quality.
I stream a lot of my music, via my bluetooth hifi amplifier. It just sounds tremendous through Tidal. So, if you pay for Spotify and ae a sound quality nerd like me, get checking out Tidal. Same price as spotify too.

1) That was Adam, not LMJ

2) Maybe Tidal sounds better but FYI your Spotify settings allows you to adjust the quality of your streams.

Um.....It was Larry who said "Its a Musical Journey" at which point, Adam chokes on his drink.

As for Spotify, even on its highest setting, it only streams at 160kbps. Tidal is 1440kpbs

I have just done an A-B comparison, using u2 Pop album. The Spotify version sounds flat, muddy and lifeless whereas the Tidal version, sounds alive, vibrant and dynamic.
I had a great time with Spotify, but, Im all about Tidal now. I have been converted. Its put a whole new spin on my music streaming.

I use Apple Music and have really enjoyed it so far. I don't go to streaming for sound quality: I save that for vinyl.

What’s getting interesting with Apple Music is the Atmos treatment. Some albums sound incredible, especially with the appropriate headphones.

Prime example: Automatic for the People.
First Chair. Last Call.

I am just this very moment, sounding out my mate, who owns the local record store, about selling all my vinyl to him. Pretty much this past 3 yrs, 90% of my music listening has been done by streaming on spotify.
Id love to free up space in my flat/appartment. Im hesitant tho, if im only going to get a couple of quid for each vinyl. I KNOW they are worth a decent amount, a they are all in VG condition at least....and there is no dodgy crap in there. it is all very sellable.

I had been basing my posts so far, on using spotify, streaming via bluetooth, on my hifi. This is so i can listen thro hi fi speakers. And yeah, the quality is far better on Tidal, on the hifi.

I just did a comparison on my phone, via wired headphones. I cant lie, Spotify was that bit louder on the phone, but i have the settings set to "loud" setting. It is LOUDER on spotify on the phone, but also, "they" do say when you have "loud" selected, the quality can suffer. So yeah...there we have it.

Truth be told tho, up to this point in my life, I rarely listen to music on my phone, preferring to hear the sounds around me, especially when out in nature, for my walks.
So 95% of my music, is listened to, via streaming through my hifi and as i have mentioned, Tidal wins hands down on that score

I stick with Spotify because the social stuff is better, collaborative playlists and such.

Since a young age, its been all about sound quality for me. That is all that matters when it comes to music. I been playing around and i have to say, through laptop speakers, both tidal and spotify are much of a muchness....but when streamed via an bluetooth amp/hifi.....you can clearly hear the difference in sound quality.
The overwhelming majority of my music listening (95%), is done via streaming through my hifi, so Tidal is the best option at the mo.

Same for me. I switched to Apple Music for a couple years because my ex gf was stalking my account all the time. So the social component has its pluses and minuses, I guess. lol. But i’m back now.

Spotify used to be the apex of streaming quality, but they have been passed in that regard, even by Apple Music - which was always considered the weakest in terms of quality. They have upped their game.

I’m on free trials for Tidal and Apple right now, along with my main Spotify account. lol.

Tidal is definitely the best quality of the three. Best streaming, app, etc.

I think their Dolby Atmos sounds better than Apple’s. Compared The War on Drugs most recent record and streamed it on Apple and then Tidal using Atmos - Tidal sounded noticeably better.

Tidal lets you run Atmos on your vehicle speakers - apple doesn’t.

The sound quality is just on another level.

The quality is so good, I may have a tough decision to make here in a few weeks once my trial expires. I am blown away by how impressive it is.
