Songs of Surrender (March 2023)
« on: June 17, 2022, 04:13:17 PM »
Who is excited, bored, annoyed, energized by the announcement that up to 40 u2 songs will be reimagined and 14 released on an album called Songs of Surrender later this year?

We now know that they have called in several of the original producers including Lillywhite and Lanois (no word on Eno)

Which songs will you want to hear?

They are just stuck in such a deep rut aren't they.

I put a fork in them ages ago - they are done.

Obviously, this is tied to Bono’s upcoming book.

Uggghhh. I guess every book in the house has really been read, and the future’s finally dried up.

It’s hard to imagine they’re innovative enough at this point to make this  remotely interesting, if this is what they really do.

And coinciding with a Bono autobiography! Hmmm. It’s more Disney tie-ins than art.

I’d rather hear them do a covers album of songs from bands like Television and Joy Division than a covers album of their own songs. And I’m not so keen to hear an album of the former, to tell you the truth.

I’d love them to make me eat these words. But, huh? Does the world really need a U2 album like this? Or what’s the point? If many of their past songs are timeless (and they truly are), there’s no need to update them. Aren’t there plenty of topics going on in 2022 they could touch on that they haven’t quite addressed before? Seems like the garden is ripe with new fruit, but they’re opening the preservative jars from last season.

I am nervously potentially interested in the album of new songs.

I don’t see myself being arsed to even listen to this reboot even once.

If folks say something is worth checking out, maybe, but otherwise not gonna bother.

Terrible Name for the album. Sting sort of did something like this with past hits with the Police and his own as a solo artist. Should be interesting!

They could actually finally re-record the POP album.

It’s very important to make versions of these songs which carry the exact cliches of 2022 music. That will certainly be an improvement upon legendary classics.

Honestly, what’s the point of this?

I’d welcome a decent reworking of EBW but apart from that the dross they’ve been churning out for the last few years can’t really be saved. As for their great tunes, what are they gonna do? A free form jazz exploration of love is blindness? Turn Drowning Man into a hard rock number?

If this album it for real it just sounds as the title implies - a band who have pretty much given up.

I’ll keep an open mind but I really don’t see how the 2022 U2 could actually IMPROVE any song from their back catalogue.

I would have said Drowning Man for the vocals. I always thought Bono was struggling on the LP (but it suits the drama) and the version they rehearsed was interesting. But I definitely don’t see how they could improve on the music. Guitar. Drums. Bass. Violin. It’s too perfect.

Surprise me, boys.
A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...

I am struggling to imagine a single improvement U2 could possibly make to any of their old songs. Sure, then band could re-work a song like Surrender (which I'm sure will be on this album), but Bono will just ruin it by either talking or shouting the words. This is going to be a cringe-fest.

None of Elton John's reimagined songs on his Duets album were an improvement on the originals.  If they're like the reimagined One with Mary J. Blige then it's a waste of time.  I can also see the songs being 'repoliticized' for these modern times.  Maybe changing some of the problematic lyrics.

I think the only similar situation was the rework of Red Hill Mining Town for the JT30 tour.

It wasn't great. It also wasn't cringy.

I think that's the best case scenario. Maybe we will end up with one or two reworks that give us new appreciation for an old song, but mostly I fear they will ruin them.
