I'd like to see the quote.  My recollection is that he was surprised by the initial composition because it did indeed have the fastest temp of any U2 song.  He didn't defend it as much as simply reacted to it with surprise.

It was an interview on TV, not something I read. It is a fast song, but I never thought it was one of their fastest tempo's. But I guess it is. He simply smiled and said one of U2's fastest tempo's, as if to say, you should really check this song out.

I've heard that Larry is also the one who wanted Mercy dropped from Bomb's tracklisting. If that's the case his taste is as questionable as Edge's.

They need to hang around with that singer from Inhaler a bit more. He knows the bands that might break through. A little bit of Fontaines DC sound on the next album *could* work if done well. But you know it will end up being a load of 60 year olds ripping the new Dublin sound...
