Do you collect anything?
« on: December 04, 2024, 09:42:31 AM »
Well, i used to collect vinyl until i discovered the joys of streaming, about 3 years ago (saves me a fortune). (Ps, i rarely spin a vinyl or CD these days).

I mostly spend the savings made from not buying Vinyl, on mens Fragrances. I must have around 140 bottles these days. As the years passed, my taste in fragrances has become more complex and expensive.

What about y'all? Do any of you collect things?
In the garden I was playing the tart
I kissed your lips and broke your heart
You
You were acting like it was the end of the world

That is an interesting thing to collect.  Never heard of that one before.

Books, movies and vinyl.  The vinyl collection is a slow grow and is only into its 4th cubicle on my living room case, but the DVDs and books have taken over my home office.  5 shelving units double stacked. Wifey says my collects now owns me.  Sure my book collection doesn't hold up to others who are avid readers.  This year i did buy myself an autographed Bukowski book that also has a small drawing of his.  Probably the only book i own that is for proper collecting and displaying.

Also have a habit of collecting knickknacks from travels. Lots of stuff from India on display in my house.  One cheap souvenir to collect while traveling is bar coasters.  I have stacks of them from many countries.  Most of them I know which country they were from and what trip of mine and year i got them.

I have a few WWII pieces that are mostly from what i got from my grandfather.  His battle helmet is on display in my office.  The Luger he brought back is in a lock box.  He ended his service at the famous Eagles Nest and in his storage box I found a ceremonial Nazi flag that he and his American combat buddies all signed.  It's pretty cool, but not exactly something you can display.  Not sure if there is a tasteful way to display it.

My U2 memorabilia is probably considered small by the standards of this group.  Lots of books and deluxe editions of albums on display but i have stopped buying them after i got the expensive edition of i.e. Live in Paris.
I do have a small piece of the actual Joshua Tree (yeah, I'm that guy) from when wifey and I found it on our drive to Vegas to get married (i know- i've told this story many times before), some ticket stubs, and silly things like the One plastic bracelet they were giving away for the i.e. tour.

I do have some autographed posters framed on my wall from musicians and celebrities, most of which i had signed for me in person except for the older celebrities- Henry Rollins, Ice T, Old 97s, The Get Up Kids, Britney Spears, Corey Feldman, Sophia Lauren, Jayne Mansfeld and a Bono one that I bought which i'm not sure is legit.

I'm an Oregon kid from the 80s so two of my top 10 movies are required to be Goonies and Stand By Me.  He's one of my favorite actors and i don't hide it.  His autobiography is pretty brutal.  Met him at one of the Goonie Anniversaries and saw his band perform.  Slipped him a  DVD copy of one of my feature films i wrote/directed but alas it didn't lead to a collaboration (yet).

Didn’t know he wrote an autobiography. I might check it out. He seems fucked up to the max but I wish him well. I don’t doubt he’s been through a lot of shit.

I actually think he's turned out incredibly well considering the addiction he overcame in his youth and the upbringing he had in hollywood, especially as his parents used him.  He's pretty spiritual and a constant worker (even if he doesn't get the big projects anymore).

Stand By Me is a great film, but yeah, Feldman had some fucked up shit happen to him.

Black T-shirts.

I have over 40. Basically, that’s all I wear. Jeans and a black T-shirt.

And it drives the missus crazy.  ;D

- « What will you wear at Xmas? »

- « The usual. Why do you keep asking me that? »

- « Urghhhhh!!! »

Most are plain black, but they can also have a white imprint. This one I got last time I went to Prince Edward Island.

The next one I’m getting

An unusual mix of gases, one a noble gas and thus doesn’t bind to other atoms, and metals—-

I used to collect insects when I was a child (you know, the boxes under glass with pinned specimens; granted my selection was rather indiscriminate, composed of stuff-around-the-house).

Then stamps.

Then body parts (not really).

Then books and now I guess other stuff like films albeit mostly in a non physical format.

Wow that’s great! 140 bottles of fragrance… or perhaps some great fragrances are with you at the moment! As for the hobbies, well, when I was a child I was a comic book collector, now it is all about getting cute mugs for a memory of the place I visited. This is a small thing though I find it nice to carry around small tokens of my trips. Any one else have something they like to collect?
