Basically, they're back in the studio, with Larry on light duties.

Probably a new album next year and a world tour the year after.

Seems like U2 are recording the follow up to OS1. I welcome this change of direction. It certainly sounds more interesting than the guitar album they were threatening to record.

Seems like they've gone back to the tried and true Brian Eno to try and get a hit record once again.

I strongly suspect when we finally get to hear their next album we'll wonder 'where the fuck is the Irish sci-fi folk music?'

I agree.

But one lives in hope that U2 can still make a record like OS1. Flawed, sure, boring in places, absolutely, but it was at least interesting and different, and gave us YBR and MS. THAT’S the U2 I love, not the version that gave us carpola like pride, beautiful day and boots, among many others.

Even so, you are probably right, it’s yet another hyperbolic sound bite from the guys that will amount to nothing.

I don't think U2 will ever record an album like OS1, and I reckon that's a good thing.

Maybe they'll reform Passengers one day and make Vol. 2, but somehow I doubt it.

Yeah, but please no talk of spaceships. That shit was corny 15 years ago.

Plus, regardless of what style of music U2 claims they are experimenting with in the initial stages of recording an album, we all know what the end result will sound like: All the sonically interesting bits will be ultimately glossed over or abandoned altogether, and we'll get something that sounds either like Beautiful Day (see: Invisible or GOOYOW) or Vertigo (see: The Miracle or The Blackout).
Listen as Hope and Peace try to rhyme,
Listen over marching bands playing out their time.

Surely, they have seen that this shit doesn't work. It gave them commercial success for two album/tour cycles, then it gave them 15+ years of irrelevance. The only way to change the narrative is to do something completely unexpected and different. It might not give them their 1980's-2000's heights, but it can change the conversation.

Of course, there's always the possibility that they actually LIKE MOR dad-rock. But surely, there's a twist in the tale?

I hope so, but I am very doubtful. Maybe it's when you reach a certain age you just lose touch, or lose that fire, I don't know. But Atomic City ain't it, muh dudes.

Larry Love is on record as saying he thinks American Soul is a good song.

Takeaway: trust nothing he says.
