Edge & Adam speak : Larry, songwriting…
« on: October 26, 2024, 07:17:06 AM »
Latest interview hints at 2 positive things (if true) : U2 going back to the 4 guys in a room formula and Larry’s health improving.

Now… we’ve been misguided before by interviews so I’m not getting overexcited or anything but I like what I’m reading.

In terms of what’s next for the band, Adam Clayton revealed their current focus on enjoying the magic of live collaborations and appreciating everything they have built up to this point. “Now we want to go back and take the layers off and get down to what the band does really well, which is to play live in a room,” he said, adding, “There’s a freshness to that now. And I don’t know if there’s many bands that can still make records that way.”

Echoing his sentiment, The Edge said: “Music made in real-time, in a room with musicians interacting with one another, it just is a narrative, a sonic narrative which you just cannot create using a different approach, using layering and drum loops or whatever.”

Although they previously stated progress on a new record is “somewhat tied” to Mullen Jr’s recovery, they will likely return to the studio in the near future as a complete entity, but for now—focussing on getting well enough to sit back behind a drum kit is the priority.

What next, punk rock from Venus?

Honestly, does anyone take this band seriously anymore? They’ve been making these trite statements for decades. It’s nice to hear Larry is fighting fit now, but I won’t be getting my hopes up for the music based on these recent remarks. They’ve consistently disappointed me since ATYCLB. So why would I bother getting excited now?

Clayton:

“Now we want to go back and take the layers off and get down to what the band does really well, which is to play live in a room,” he said, adding, “There’s a freshness to that now. And I don’t know if there’s many bands that can still make records that way.”

Says a man totally out of touch with reality. Of course there are bands doing that. They make and play music all the time. This kind of arrogant statement, made by a band richer than god, is why people dislike them. Do they honestly think musicians can’t be creative in the most basic sense of writing and playing music together? Clayton always seemed like the down to earth one. His statement is the kind of crap bono usually comes out with.

Aside from the Larry bits this is essentially recycled statements from the PR blender we've heard over the past 20 plus years.

... a sonic narrative which you just cannot create using a different approach, using layering and drum loops or whatever.”

Well that's disappointing to hear, since my 3rd favorite U2 album has loads of layers and drum loops. Oh well, I guess it'll be more attempts to write another version of Vertigo.

It’d be nice if there was the slightest bit of mea culpa.

“We’ve said many times over the years that the four of us banging it out in a room together is how we make our best work, but the fact is that we haven’t taken our own advice for a long time, and we realized it shows. We even made due without Larry at times, but it isn’t the same.”

They always make me think of the George Lucas interview from the 80’s where he reminds the audience that the special effects are nice to have, but you have to stay focused on the story and not make them the centerpiece…and then he went and did exactly that.

Your 3rd favorite album is my favorite album - although i will admit its not their best.  But it is from the correct decade of U2s greatest music.

Huh?  Dude, this is copy/paste from every other previous bullshit PR statement they’ve ever made.

Only those who want to be misguided, are misguided.

Bono adds to the fire in Record Collector :

Bono: “Edge has likened Re-Assemble to a throwdown, in terms of where U2 might go next…Fresh paint…you have to be fit to play first touch football…I want to hear the sound of our band in a room…to feel a performance get away from us and be better for that…I experienced it last month with Larry, Adam and Edge, and I want more

Then Adam addresses songwriting and relevance :

Where are U2 currently? How far ahead is your diary booked?
Adam: Our diary is always completely overbooked. Whether or not we turn up for the dates in the diary is another thing. We realise that we’re at a critical phase in our career. Very often at this point in a band’s life, they see that the end is in sight. We’re not getting any closer to the culture. We’re not getting any more relevant, so our songwriting is less important. What you really acquire after being a band for a long time is an audience, and that audience represents a field, as in agriculture. You can go to that audience maybe every three years, or whatever, and you can present yourselves differently to them. But then you have to leave them alone. You have to leave a little bit of space

Yup. That’s why your band is failing.
