Should U2 change the words to October?
« on: September 04, 2024, 03:53:14 AM »
Climate change means autumn is with us later now. Here in the UK, the trees are stripped bare more November/December time than October. Should the words therefore be changed to accurately reflect the world now, and draw attention to the climate crisis?

You may choose 2 options, if you wish

I voted yes. U2, especially given their gigantic carbon footprint, have a responsibility to highlight climate change, and encourage fans to do the same. Bono recently changed the words to pride, so why can’t he change the words to October?

November
And the trees are stripped bare
Of all they wear
What do I care?

November
And kingdoms rise
And kingdoms fall
But you go on
And on

Well, I’m surprised by your votes. Recently, bono has been lecturing us on Isreal/Palestine at the sphere during pride:

“Early morning, Oct. 7, the sun is rising in the desert sky,”,  “Stars of David, they took your life but they could not take your pride.”

Now then, the fact that he got his facts wrong originally, because MLK didn’t die ‘early morning, April 4th’, isn’t the point here. Neither is the fact that the subject is so freekin’ complicated, it has no place in a something as utterly vacuous as a concert in vegas, watched by an audience filming it on their iPhones, drinking pink lemonade.

No, the point here is if bono wants to tell us what to do, he’d better start paying attention to his own complicity. Ergo, addressing his role in climate change, by changing the lyrics to October.

You'd have gone down a storm back in the heyday of forums 10 years or so ago.

It'a a shame such an act has to perform to such a dying audience...

Jst for clarity, the trees started to shed their leaves, mid august, up here in Scotland.
In the garden I was playing the tart
I kissed your lips and broke your heart
You
You were acting like it was the end of the world

In New England, USA, our weather remains quite warm, but our leaves are starting to turn rather early.

There are a variety of factors, including how wet/dry the summer was, the temperatures in the autumn, and possibly also affected by how the spring went.

Our trees are almost never bare in October, but the stripping certainly does happen during that month, as well as September and November.

I don’t know if Bono knows anything about it, though, because all the trees in Ireland were used on his enemies.

The thing is, bono must have been talking about the trees in Ireland. Are there any Irish members here? In England, we definitely see autumn arriving later now, typically followed by milder winters. It seems reasonable to assume the same is the case across the Irish Sea.

October was played 42 times during the I+E tour. It beggars belief bono didn’t update the words. Or at a minimum, give fans a lecture on climate change before the song. Anyone wood think he has a guilty conscience…

Climate change is for the little people.  Very important people have very important meetings to travel to and from.

Climate change is the single biggest danger humanity faces, no matter how important bono - or anyone else - thinks they are

There is so much cognitive dissonance around the topic that I would not know where to begin.

It’s still pretty damn hot here in the American south.  Over in Phoenix, high of 111F (44C) today.

September
And I am stripped bare
Of all I wear
Who the fuck cares

September
Temperatures rise
And my pants fall
The heat goes on
And on

In Ireland we’ve had one of the worst Augusts ever and now the leaves
are already falling from the trees.

Sorry if that doesn’t fit the agenda.
