ZOO TV (live in Dublin, 1993)-EP
« on: August 30, 2024, 11:44:08 AM »
I haven't received it yet but I listened to it on Apple Music.

I got to say this EP is, for me, a step in the right direction. When they released the Aching Baby 30 fan club release, I was wishing they'd release more stuff from the vaults and that's exactly what they're doing. Hopefully the next step is to have full shows rather than an EP.

Overall, I'm very pleased with this release.
-It sounds great (on a decent pair of earphones). Especially in the lower frequencies (kick, bass). I'm very pleased with that aspect because I always thought that the drums on the original broadcast were way too soft and on some songs you could barely hear the bass.
-It's not the broadcast we've had on bootleg for years, but the performance from the day before, which makes it a truly new release.
-They chose songs from AB & Zooropa, not the old warhorses (Pride, Streets...)

And, yes, I'm a sucker and ordered both the vinyl and Japanese CD with an extra track (The Fly). I'll keep you posted.

Edit : while I was typing this, I was listening to it. There's something weird with Mysterious Ways. If you listen closely between 5:30 and 5:40, it's like they cut out Bono's voice but you can still hear the echo picked by other mics. It's the falsetto part where Bono says "I'll show you places that you've new seen" or something like that that's on the august 28 bootleg.
Now... is that a snippet ? From which song ? Or is it post me too self censorship (touch me babe) ?

Edit 2 : Stay starts at 90-92 BPM but by the time they reach the final chorus they're at 98 BPM. Is that the last tour they didn't use a click track on every song ?

To answer your first edit, U2gigs has no snippets listed for MW on those dates.

It really looks like U2 made it post #MeToo friendly.

Not sure i'll buy it. $30 for an EP on vinyl is a bit much.

Well, this IS exciting.

I think I’m going to risk nudging them back to my #40 top artist on Spotify by listening to this.

Since, sadly, I went nuts and played UABRS this spring.

That was so fucking great. I want the whole show. I want more shows. This was worth an EP. Give us more.

Summer of 93 was the pinnacle of their career. That’s what you’re listening too. And yes, we want the whole fucking thing.

Um, the whole show was broadcast live on FM radio, back in the day. I recorded it on cassette, from Radio 1,  on the night it was aired.
A few years back, my mate let me rais his CD collection as he was getting rod of his CDs. So i got the Soundboard Recording of the Gig, on double CD.

Being honest, the whole thing, isnt in my top 5 Zoo TV live performances i have heard. There is something about it, that puts me off. It lacks vibrancy (for my taste)
In the garden I was playing the tart
I kissed your lips and broke your heart
You
You were acting like it was the end of the world

This EP is another night, Smee.

And you’re right, the tour was so good that I could list several nights I’d really want the full recording of.

That’s insane. One night should adequately capture a tour, but there were so many moments, so much evolution, even some set list variety over time (a little).

I think the ZOOTV 30 fan club CD was an opening door. This EP is the doormat. We want in !

For all the crap I'm giving to U2 lately, they would totally recover my support if they released full shows from the vaults. We now know they have TONS of them. And they're very good at remastering them. MSG 1987 sounded great, this sounds great, the remastered UABRS sounded great.

Come on lads.

About Zoo TV : I'd agree with Smee that 1992 was much better than 1993. Bono had to care for his voice in 1993, whereas he gave some of his wildest performances in 1992. The arena shows from the European shows were amazing but the Outside Broadcast leg was on a whole other level. The band was never as inspired to deliver on a stage.

Yeah, Stockholm '92 has to be the greatest U2 show ever performed. Wish I'd've been there.
