I went for option 3. Why? Well, October - the album and song - are top tier U2 for me. Equally TUF, pride notwithstanding, is also top tier U2 and 4th July is a perfect bridge between two worlds

So, yeah. Both highly atmospheric, both essential to the sonic cohesion of each LP.

Autumn versus Summer.  I always liked autumn the best.  One always has that familiar feeling of things starting over again.  I think it goes back to the days when it was the start a new school term after the long summer holidays.  I love the smell of autumn in the air, too.

October it is.

I freekin’ hated school, though, so much as I love autumn, back then, October was bittersweet for me. Not so now, I’m a mature metrosexual.

For me, TUF is an autumn album. It has always resonated like that for me, probably because it was released in October 1984, and since it was my first “new” U2 album after becoming a fan, I listened to it countless times until Xmas that year.

So I’m a bit confused right now.

I love 4th Of July, but I've got to go with October. Both are beautiful tracks, but the piano and the lyrics in October push it ahead for me.

October I like.

4th July was voted worst song on TUF recently. It gets less flak than Boots & Yahwah as it's not so in your face.

It's also in between two greats so was accepted more.

October is one of U2’s hidden gems.

I was driving today and had my playlist on random and I had Don Henley’s Boys of Summer and October play back to back. A pretty heavy combo with both songs alluding to being in the fall of live, the carefree days of youth gone by.

Nobody on the road
Nobody on the beach
I feel it in the air
The summer's out of reach
Empty lake, empty streets
The sun goes down alone

October
And the trees are stripped bare
Of all they wear
What do I care?

Picked 4th of July. October is the only listenable track for me from the October album.  There's just nothing in that album. Weak lyrics, weak instruments, just nothing.  u2 are lucky they were given another chance to record after it.

4th of July is a bridge between two worlds. A fantastically atmospheric piece, inspired no doubt by Brook. It fits perfectly on TUF.
