Now World Athletics, the global governing body for track and field, will break new ground by making payments to competitors more straightforward: All individual gold medalists in the sport at the Paris Games this summer will receive $50,000. (Winning relay teams will share the money.) The federation said it would begin paying silver and bronze medalists lesser amounts in 2028.

The federation president, Sebastian Coe, a two-time gold medalist in the amateur era, called the decision “a pivotal moment for World Athletics and the sport of athletics as a whole, underscoring our commitment to empowering the athletes and recognizing the critical role they play in the success of any Olympic Games.”

I fear for the safety of the visitors. 

Paris should have been cancelled following the carnage at the final of the 2022 football Champions League in Paris at the same Olympic stadium.

$50K is a joke.   Zero for Silver and Bronze is an insult.  But better than nothing I guess.

I feel for the triathletes who are going to have to swim in the Siene which has been a sewer for over a century.  They are still trying to clean it up with a new waste treatment system as we speak.

The ISA's Olympic qualification process is quite convoluted.

But it kind of has to be: After all, there are only 48 total slots between two genders across an entire world of surfers, and they can't all come from the WSL. Every surfing nation gets 4 slots, and not all of one of them has a surfer represented on the CT (yet.)

The Cliff's Notes version is that between the 2023 CT rankings and multiple ISA qualifiers over a two year time period, 46 of the 48 surfers had been decided by last month. However, the ISA/Olympics left two TBD "universality slots" open.

What is a universality slot, exactly?

Basically, they're slots for surfers from countries that are traditionally underrepresented in the Olympics. For the 2024 Games, the International Olympic Committee reserved 102 universality slots across all sports. Since this is only surfing's second time in the Olympics, it was up to the ISA to decide who those last two coveted spots should go to.

The Refugee Olympic Team for the 2024 Paris Games includes a record 36 athletes from 11 different countries across 12 sports.

The full athlete roster is here and represents more than 100 million displaced people from around the world.

The team composition was based on criteria including each athlete's performances, their refugee status as verified by the United Nations Refugee Agency, a balanced representation of sport and gender and a spread of countries of origin.

For the first time, the Refugee Olympic Team will compete under its own emblem.

The Refugee Olympic Team was created starting with the 2016 Rio Games to "act as a symbol of hope for refugees worldwide and bring global attention to the magnitude of the refugee crisis when they take part in the Olympic Games," according to the IOC at the time.

Great Britain have secured four out of a possible five relay slots for the Olympics in Paris this summer via the World Athletics Relays event in the Bahamas.

The women's 4x100m team won their heat on the first day, while the 4x100m men's quartet, plus the 4x400m men's and women's teams, were all second in their heats.

The top two teams in each heat progressed to the final on day two while also securing Olympic places.
