UC has a decent melody. However, WTAF?

Restart and reboot yourself
You're free to go
Oh, oh
Shout for joy if you get the chance
Password, you enter here, right now
Oh, oh
You know your name so punch it in
Hear me, cease to speak that I may speak
Shush now
Oh, oh
Don't move or say a thing

Haha that's why it made my list, an utter embarrassment. I made this chantless edit years ago, it's all I could do to salvage an otherwise half-decent track:

https://mega.nz/file/ZhpEBLRK#m3Y72nUqZtLpVo5hUjk3HoTGmrRaxwdZHws87dERgms

From the first listen until today, that song always feels like an inside joke, for lack of a better term. Are these references to phone/computer terms supposed to be clever? It's obviously supposed to be analogous to one's life somehow, but "clunky" doesn't even begin to describe it.  Was there no one within the band (or production team) saying "Let's try something else"? Although I think Lanois has a lot to do with those lyrics.  MoS is also more of a Lanois song than a U2 song.

I think by that point in U2's career they had lost touch with people without knowing it. I remember Bono in concert trying to wow the crowd during Unknown Caller's preamble by recalling the chirping of the birds that made it onto the studio version's intro, and no one gave a shit or were really listening to him.

Most of U2's music post-Vertigo is incidental to their catalog and career. Like, when the definitive documentary about the band is made, it won't need to mention songs like Invisible, Crazy Tonight, or You're the Best Thing about Me.

To me, NLOTH is their worst album. Every song except for 2-3 is clunky as hell and lacks a functioning quality control both musically and lyrically. To think that this album was made by the same band with the same producers as Achtung Baby is mind-boggling. When I count, U2 have probably made 8-10 good to great songs in the past 20 years. The rest is, as you say, incidental.

I'd be curious to know which songs from the post-Pop era you'd include on an album if you only had, say, 10 slots? Without thinking too hard about it, I'd include:

Being Born
Crystal Ballroom
Book of Your Heart
The Troubles
Magnificent
Moment of Surrender
The Ground beneath Her Feet
Stateless
Never Let Me Go
Kite

But like I said, the only songs from the new millennium that will ever matter for the U2 story are Beautiful Day, Elevation, Vertigo, and COBL. Everything else is just them treading water.

Listen as Hope and Peace try to rhyme,
Listen over marching bands playing out their time.

Sorted this list a week ago :

Being Born
Book of your Heart
Love is all we have left
In a little while
The little things that give you away
The troubles
Moment of Surrender
Cedars of Lebanon
Stuck in a moment
No line on the horizon

But holy shit ! Forgot Stateless and GBHF… which I’d happily swap for the last 2 on my list.
A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...

I merged the lists from the HELL thread.

PS: this doesn’t mean we’re in heaven, btw.
