Star Wars: The Last Jedi
« on: December 11, 2017, 02:23:24 PM »
Mods, feel free to merge if necessary. But I think this movie deserves its own thread. Im sure many will go see it this weekend, so lets all discuss it here. Me? Im seeing it the night before release on Thursday at 10pm (our little 100 year old theater where I live in Alaska gets to screen it the night before release  ;))

Absolutely NO spoilers here.....the world premier was on Saturday night - looking good:

Its FANTASTIC.

Refreshingly different, funny, dark. Carrie Fisher & Mark Hamill are outstanding. Lots of twists too.

Why do i have to be travelling this weekend?  I was in bed at midnight last night and saw a good seat available for a 1:30 AM showing and almost purchased it, but alas i am not as young as i used to be.

I was immensely disappointed with it. I'm seeing it again today with my kids so maybe I'll soften to it, but there're just so many problems with it.

I disagree with The Exile on this (about the only thing we disagree on). But of course I 100% respect his opinion. And I get where he has issues with it as we have communicated more at length than on here.

This will be the Star Wars movie to divide the fan base more than any other. For the first 30 minutes, I was like "what the f*** is this, what HAVE they done". But then all of a sudden I just got it. Its hard to explain. There was a scene with Rey and Luke that triggered that. I think is a brilliant attempt to purposefully deconstruct the whole series and myth of Star Wars. I was ready for that, many others quite understandably were not, and that's ok. I do not want to put any spoilers in here, there will be PLENTY of that when everyone has seen it.

Having said that (don't worry - I wont give anything away) - this movie contains the BEST scene with the BEST effects Ive ever seen in a movie. When you see it, its like a silent car crash, on a catastrophic level. Exile - you MUST have like that scene?

See my comments on the other thread.
I had a blast at the time, but after sitting on it for a few days the negativity is starting to ooze.

I saw it again last night, this time with my kids.

Since I knew what was coming I was better able to prepare myself for all the stupid parts (which unfortunately comprise around half the movie) and therefore enjoyed it more than the first time.

I have NO problem with the actual direction RJ took with the overall mythology. Bring on the deconstruction, I say. It was just the forced chemistry, pointless plot directions, and overuse of silly CG stuff that took me out of it. I mean, it replaced the podrace with a lop-eared horse chase that was unbelievably prequelly and juvenile.

But there's around 45-60 minutes of pretty good movie in there for sure.

What I want to know is: does Leia wear a pantsuit?

I wrote out my reasons in the other thrread, but this film was horrible.  horrible.  apparently MArk HAmil told the director as much after reading the script.
