The TalkU2 Top 30 Albums of All Time
« on: September 26, 2020, 08:22:49 AM »
Inspired by the discussion about Rolling Stones Top 500 i thought it was time for the real music aficionados (the good people of talku2) to come up with what will no doubt be THE definitive list.

This is how it will work:

Everybody gets the chance to list their Top 30 albums of all time.

The lists will then be used to compile an aggregated Top 30 based on points awarded to each album for it's appearance on peoples lists.

Cool?

Have a feeling it may not work too well and we just end up with Achtung Baby and TJT at numbers 1 and 2.

Which of course on a u2 forum is to be expected...

I toyed with idea of making it 'non u2' but then thought that may put people off.

Of course, U2 will be over represented, but doesn’t render the list invalid.

Will you list the result as a Top100? More? Less?

Think will just stick to 30.

As much as u2 have made the best music, for my taste, if i am to join in with this, i think i would have to exclude them from my vote, just to keep things interesting. Also, Im not sure if i could place the albums in any order. It would simply be 30 albums that I enjoy. Many would be albums from my past, which played a big roll in shaping my musical tastes.

I'm also hesitant to put together a list if U2 is to be included. But if the majority of participants are in favor of that, I'll be happy to keep the band in mind.

Yeah my instinct was because there will be a bias towards u2 (naturally) that leaving them out may be a good idea, but then i thought people would not like that!

I can't participate musically but am happy to think through the logic.

Having a small pool of contributors making a list of 30 to create an aggregate list of 30 means that any album that receives 2 votes will be on the list. Hard to say if 30 albums will get 2 votes in this circumstance - maybe.

I guess try it and see.

You'll also want to define the parameters a bit more. Is this an "objective" list based on musical contribution, "objective" based on cultural contribution, subjective based on your own personal top 30, etc.?

Also, how much Van Halen knowledge is required to participate?

Yes, yes you can.

Knowing they are shite is enough.... ;)

As for the 'scoring' i have devised an incredibly clever system (albeit by my very low level of intelligence).....the more lists the better though
