Desert Island U2 Mix Tape

Here’s the premise: you’re going on a desert island for a year, there’s no internet and you only have a Walkman. Time to make a mix tape like we used to do in the 80’s/90’s. You are provided with one 90 mins cassette, so you need to fit your songs on 2 sides of 45 mins. This requires a bit of of work I noticed.

My mix tape would look like this:

I'd start with RDS 1993, try to trim a few songs so I can fit others in.

Maybe a full live tape. UV Sheffield. Discotheque and Mismi Rotterdam. EBW VMA. Maybe squeeze the opera part only of Miss Sarajevo. IALW Boston. WUDM Slane. I ran out of tape.

I needed a longer tape...a c-120 would have helped, and i had to have the album version twice!

I needed a longer tape...a c-120 would have helped, and i had to have the album version twice!

Those C120 tapes weren’t very high quality, that’s why I stipulated 90 mins tapes. Those were the gold standard. Now, go fetch the appropriate remixes, and maybe we’ll be back on speaking terms.

Right about the 120's - as i recall the tape was thinner and prone to tangling.

I have to admit I got those mixes off the wiki page for the song.

Of course, there’s more of them out there. I’m very disappointed in you. When you hate something that much, you should know everything about it.

He also ADDED THE RUNNING TIMES. (Well, maybe. I didn't check his work. But I suspect he did, as a quick and dirty calculation checks out.)

Great question - going to give it some thought and won’t reduce it to the same tired path of hating post-2000 U2. Pretty disrespectful to the original poster. How has this become about Elevation? Let it go!!

I felt that A Different Kind Of Blue is a perfect segue between these sides, occupying the limbo between the Please cliffhanger and Zooropa's otherwordliness. The Electric Co. feels like switching the channel from Daddy's Gonna Pay, them being so different, which works with the latter's opening radio static. Slug is a celestial journey into the cacophony of space, a perfect and vague closer.

I may have spent more time focusing on the coherence of these as albums than tapes, but oh well.
