I'd seen bits and pieces of this over the years (basically the first 5 songs), but never the whole thing. Rockpalast uploaded the entire show to pay tribute to Dusty Hill - amazingly, if the stage announcer is to be believed, this was the first show ZZ Top ever did in Europe.   :o :o :o :o :o

It appears it may have been their first show in Europe, although I did find mentions of two shows in November 1975 in Germany, in support of Black Sabbath. Not sure how accurate that is though, because they played Kansas City on October 31, 1975 and then the next night on November 1, 1975 in "Ludwigshafen Am Rein" Germany, supporting Black Sabbath? I think that would be unlikely given the time and distance.

This show occurred on April 19, 1980.

What was the attendance and box office gross?

Unless it was a SELL OUT of 50,000 and grossed over 1m then we can rest safe in the knowledge it was a shite show.

Billboard Boxscore did not start to report figures outside of North America until 1995.

Grughalle where they played can hold up to 10,000 people, but they may have been playing as part of a festival or multi-act line up. Ticket price was probably somewhere around $10 dollars.

A lot of great shows happened on the German show Rockpalast, which often did shows at the Grughalle. I love the Police show that took place there in October 1980.

The music doesn't kick in until the 1:10 mark, so that would be 18 minutes of pure whoop-ass.

The Who - Concert For New York - October 2001

This is really special. I remember watching this show which was televised all over and had an outstanding lineup: Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, the Who, Billie Joel, Bon Jovi, etc.... Well, the Who just steamrolled them all. You could feel it 3000 miles away over the TV. The floor was made up of NY police and firefighters and they just let loose to the Who's music. All the anger, the angst, the emotion just poured out and you could see and feel it... no other performers got that from the audience. And what is amazing is this was the Who far from their prime. They were well into their 50's and Keith Moon had been dead for over 20 years. But everything that night came together and it was amazing.

Do yourself a favor and take 27 minutes and watch this legendary performance:

Here is a short clip of a few musicians describing that performance:

The Edge: I watched it with Bono on TV and we couldn't believe it, the Who owned that show. They were so much more powerful than any other artist.

Eddie Vedder: that performance is one of the best illustrations of the power of music.
