Ah, jeez. I've bored our members with my Streets story already...it did literally save my life.
Literally. Finger on trigger. The long, long intro was in my head...pulled me back. I won't try to explain it...but it was real. And, I'm still here...

Thank God my music's still alive...

I can't claim literal lifesaving by Streets but it is a v v important song to me, and its healing and strength-giving properties are immense. It has certainly given me the strength to get me through some days that I just didn't know how else to pull through in one piece, and almost certainly will again.

You NEED to see "Fearless", a film by Peter Weir with Jeff bridges. I swear it's the exact same use for the intro.
A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...

The song that saved my life is "Bullet the Blue Sky". Not the lyrics, of course, but the general mood of the song. I was in a dark place for years and rather than becoming crazy I learned the guitar trying to play that song.

I saw a documentary once, of a guy who blamed U2 for having persistent tinnitus resulting (according to him) of a Zooropa show being too loud. Of course he had a hard case since he was the only one suffering from this after the show (I believe it was Marseille, I was seated in the stadium). But to illustrate his pain, the TV crew kept editing images of the guy running and "Streets" with a distorted sound.

I felt sorry for him though, because tinnitus is terrible.

It didn't really save my life,  but i can recall the moment it "hit" me.  I was at a celebration of some kind,  Fort Eustis Va,  probably 1994.  There was a ton of people there on a warm and muggy afternoon and the beverages they were a flowing  :)

At the conclusion of the Commanding General's speech there was a low level flyover of a F-117A Stealth Fighter which was an awesome sight to behold.  After the stealth got done blowing our minds and disappeared out of sight there was an eerie silence.....followed by the intro to Streets over the PA system.

I just stood there staring up at the cloud formations on this partly sunny day - people were trying to talk to me but i had already tuned them out.  They clouds - they did something strange and i could only just watch them in awe from down below.  I was alone there in that crowd,  just the clouds and me,  all alone.....and Streets.  It's as if God had picked that very moment to play it for me.

Haven't been quite the same since i suppose...
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing" John 15:5

I remember playing it after saying goodbye to my 4 year old brother to go out to my freshman year of college.  He didn’t realize I wouldn’t be around.  Tears in my eyes I put streets on as my drive away music.
* that’s my streets story.

All great stories...I know that a lot of folks have gotten their fill of hearing Streets over the years. But I never will tire of it...it touches me every single time I hear it. EVERY SINGLE TIME.
I'm not saying it's their best song. But...for me, it's the most powerful.
Thanks, U2.

I agree, riffraff, it's not my very favorite song and it may not be their "best" but it is probably their most powerful.

For me knowing the history of the song (Bono and Ali's visit to a village in Africa) along with the spiritual piece of it (according to rumor the streets of heaven have no name) all this came together with the ending of MLK into streets add in the actual history of the song from Eno and the band and you have this masterpiece that was never suppose to happen but it did and with it carries a haunting power and takes the listener to another place....

And for me there have been several points where I was bankrupt as a person feeling as if I had nothing to offer and this song pulled me from the mire.....thank you Eno for not deleting that 1st recording
