The Blackout - Paul Simon influence
« on: February 19, 2019, 02:55:37 AM »
Surprised I haven't seen this mentioned, but anyone else think Paul Simon's "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" influenced Bono? Probably a coincidence, probably a connection, who knows with Bono and his warehouse of song lyrics.

You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free

The Edge: “[Eno] would love to see us making albums a bit more like [Zooropa]. Where we go, ‘You know what? We’re not going to second-guess any of this. Let’s just go for it.’”

U2 Fans: We'd all love to see that, Edge.

I hope it's a coincidence...but I did notice it, too...the very first listen, actually!

Bono actually said this in an interview. He was with Paul Simon before the I&E Madison Square garden gig and he wrote the lyrics on a napkin based on Paul Simon reciting 50 ways to leave your lover......

Can't say that i hear the connection/influence.  Don't think it's a very good song of Simon's anyway- they could find better songs to borrow from.

I'd literally never heard the Paul Simon song  before (You Can Call Me Al is as far as I got with him).
