Dynamic track that launched U2 into the mainstream.  Edge shines on 2 instruments.  Bono throttles the song to the next level when he belts "Say its true !!!"  We see it now as a warhorse but do not deny its power.  Love it.

10 - Classic.

I had a Commodore 64 program that a friend of fine  gave me that used the music generator on the C-64 to make music files. One of the 5 songs on it was New Years Day... first U2 song that I ever heard. Probably early 1987. I was 10.
I saw Gloria live. Even if I never see the band live again, at least I saw Gloria live. :)

10. Classic - my favourite U2 song released up to that point. Hasn’t aged.

For me the first time I heard NYD was from a friend's cassette tape of Under a Blood Red Sky - I was curious about this band U2 that everyone was raving about prior to AB's release.  It is one of the most pivotal tracks in my conversion to lifelong U2 fan.

8/10... but I should've opted for a 9/10.

Tremendous bass-work with complimentary fast-paced drumming. I love watching Edge's dexterous live performances of it, alternating between the keys and guitar.

Easily one of the band's greatest early works.
