A little more on the passing of Ace Frehley for me
This death kinda rocked me in a weird way. It kinda feels like I lost part of my youth. I have 3 older brothers, and when I was growing up we all loved sports and music.
In the late 70’s I was a little kid and my oldest brother is 10 years older than me. At the time I couldn’t really get into the music he was listening to like Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, etc.. but the one band I could get into that he liked was Kiss. The image was a huge factor for me as a kid, and Ace was my hero at a young age.
My brother put a big Ace poster on my wall, and hung the pictures of the 4 solo album covers in the corner of my room. I would listen to Kiss Alive, Destroyer, Kiss Alive 2 all the time. I didn’t really know what Love Gun or Rocket Ride were all about, but it sounded cool. For Halloween I’d get the Kiss costume and did Kiss air band in elementary school.
As I got older I discovered other artists that I liked more than Kiss, but I could always go back and enjoy the music. As much as people put them down, they had a ton of basic fun great rock tunes. The curse of the makeup is that people wouldn’t give the music a chance. I was listening to a tribute on Sirius radio on the weekend and they had a number of guitar players including John 5, Tom Morello, Nuno Bettencourt, Joe Bonammessa, and others say that the reason they picked up a guitar was because of Ace. They all mentioned that Ace best attribute, aside from the swagger/coolness factor, was that his solos were a song within the song, melodic and hummable, which isn’t an easy thing to do.
All weekend I had Kiss on in the background, bringing back memories of being in my basement with my brothers and playing air guitar to Detroit Rock City.
Thanks Ace
