Anyone else into vinyl?
« on: October 18, 2017, 01:41:43 AM »
I only got into vinyl earlier this year after building a new music listening place with a record player. My collection has grown from a few inherited vinyl records to dozens (including all of 80s U2, some of post-00s U2). I'm pretty much addicted to browsing vinyl shops in any city I visit and scored some pretty good ones over my summer trips. How about everyone else?

Over here!!

For a couple of years now. I was already a little bit U2 fan when I started. I buyed Wide Awake In America and *BOOM*, Bad and ASOH just blew me away. I've got now every U2 album except No Line (and OS1). Bomb, Leave Behind and Zooropa are bootlegs. And I have a few singles.

It's a nice thong to do! :)

I have early albums all the way up through R&H on vinyl.  I also have SOI on vinyl.  I wouldn't say I'm a collector, but I have a small collection.

Well, my last house had some vinyl flooring...I am not including that in my collection.

But it was a really cool floor...checkerboard.

My flooring is done with original Pop and ATYCLB LPs. In the corner there was a small open spot. U2-3 could flill that up perfectly.

Quite expensive floor, though.

How cool, or obsessive maybe, would it be to have a couch or piece of furniture, upholstered in images of U2 album covers or maybe a quilt for your bed?

I got back into collectiong vinyl about 10 yrs ago (long before it became the Hip Thing to do). I stopped buying vinyl originally, when i got my first CD player, around 1989. I had a fairly healthy collection of u2 (inc 7" &12" singles), which had been stored at my Mum and Dads house. When i got back into collecting vinyl...i went to reclaim my collection, but about 95% of it had vannished. I can only assume my mum had donated it to charity shops. She died in 2003, so, will never know.
Worth noting, im more into getting older version of albums where possible, as this modern trend, of putting a single album, over 2 peices of vinyl does my noggin in.
I also happen to think that (certainly the new vinyl i tend to buy) is rather steep in price....usually about £25. I think that is a rip off. We were told years back, that vinyl prices were high, as there were so few being made. So, whats their excuse now?

PS, I dont think i have bought any vinyl this year. Luckily, im not into modern day artists, so there are very few albums that come out now which i would like to own.
Im gonna wait and see if the new Robert Plant vinyl comes down in price, before purchasing it

Older versions are most of the times pretty expensive (Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin). But it's a fun thing to do. Bootlegs or reissues don't really count in my 'collection'. I will try to replace them with the original ones. But it's a different in price (€20 or €200).

2 LPs for an album which is because of the better quality. More space for the groove and the outer rings are better than the inner rings. Also, some albums (My sister bought Ed Sheerans latest album) are even meant to be played on 45 rpm. That's even better!

Which artist (besides U2) do you all have more? And which (artist or LP) do you want to get in the future?

I have completed studio albums of The Eagles (which I don't listen anymore) and Dire Straits (big fan, hope they'll reunite. The bassist wants to, but Mark Knopfler don't). I have a lot Muse, Bob Dylan, Simple Minds.

I still want more Muse, Patty Smith (I have Dream Of Live), Dylan (would like to have Blood on the tracks), Bowie. But the one piece I really want is M's Pop Muzik (yes, 'the' Pop Muzik!). That vinyl is just too cool. It has two parallel grooves: The one time you listen to it you've got another song than when you play the same side the other time.

My collection started many years ago when my brother started buying me all the U2 records he could find.  I've only had a record player the last 3-4 years and have steadily started to build my collection since then.
I feel my luck could change.
