SOI - Current Thoughts
« on: November 13, 2025, 06:24:55 PM »
I haven't intentionally listened to much U2 stuff in a long time, with one exception a few months back when I revisited some live tracks.

Yesterday I decided to put SOI on for a spin as I was out running errands in the car.

I listened to this album quite a bit for a few years post release and I thought at the time it was better than it was credited for.

But listening yesterday, it did nothing for me.  In fact, it was awful.  Has not aged well at all.  I skipped Miracle because that song has always been a turd, but I used to really enjoy EBW, California, Iris and even Volcano (yeah, I know).  But none of them had any of the power or emotion that I remember.  Just absolutely flat, nothing.

TIWYCRMN was an absolute embarrassment (despite the opening which is kinda decent).  SLABT I realize is a forum fav but that also did nothing for me (I was never a huge fan to begin with so...).  Every track just really bad.  Maybe I need to put headphones on, but I fear that may make it even worse.

Any other thoughts on this album from recent listens?

Haven’t listened to SOI for a very long time. Except only The Crystal Ballroom on some occasions.

My recommendation would simply be to give Zooropa a spin. With headphones.

Not a bad idea.  The band who made that album seems to have existed a million years ago.

What’s cool about Zooropa is that it hasn’t really aged.

It's still a top 5 album for me.  I think it holds up well enough.  It was never an amazing album but i thought it was fun with 1 classic track and 2 great ones.  My only complaint has only ever been Cash taking over singing duties on Wanderer.  Should've been a duet.
