"The big boys are back, and we need them, you said"
« on: November 05, 2025, 12:44:06 PM »
The quote is from a track by the Pet Shop Boys, whereby the narrator imagines an argument with a friend/partner. The friend/partner is enthused by a contemporanous quote from Richard Ashcroft of the Verve, whereby Ashcroft was quoted in an interview. The narrator is sceptical and ironic, as most narrative voices in the PSB's ouvre tend to be.

For me, listening to and rediscovering bands like the Verve, the Stone Roses, and I suppose also, the likes of Led Zeppelin and Queen and the Who - the big operatic voice, the stadium filling bands - and recalling an interview with Bono from circa '99 or so, I wonder, why didn't anyone else grasp the mettle? 'Cos it was there for the taking circa 99/00 or so.

"There's nothing wrong with U2. As far as I'm concerned, I've stolen from Larry Mullen's career for years. Without Larry, I wouldn't be able to stomp and sing, it'd be difficult. I mean I owe debts to the Bhundu Boys, Larry Mullen, Stewart Copeland. They're good players, and they're great songwriters" - Gary "Reni" Wren, drummer, The Stone Roses reunion press conference, 18/10/2011

"I'd just like to put on record that that's bobbins" - Ian Brown, singer, ditto

Everything took a slip sideways right about then, I dunno.  If anybody 'picked it up' it was nobodies like The Strokes (remember the 'new rock'?) and The Black Keys.

It slipped through Coldplay's fingers?

I think we were just lucky to be alive when you had a decade like the 90's which had great music for quite a while until the rap metal bullshit came about.

Listening to XMU quite a bit in the gangsta mobile - there are some good songs on that one.  Only problem is some of them sound new and yet probably 20 years old.  But at least they sound fresh.

HMTMKMKM is 30 years old now.  Imagine being a child in say,  1985,  and you are listening to some 30 years old shit your Dad might have played,  from 1955.  It was likely the Beatles or Elvis and it sounded really fucking old,  perhaps corny even.  The 50's sound was dated then as it is now.  BATMAN at 30 however still sounds fresh to my ears today....am i wrong?

You dig around a bit, some you take to, some you throw back. When I was a kid our family would take long road trips to California. My Dad loved playing his CCR greatest hits tape, my Mom liked the Beach Boys, 50’s music, 60’s pop….

Some of those songs I still love. Elvis, Roy Orbison, Otis Redding.. A good song is a good song, no matter the decade.

Now I’m the Dad and I sometimes hear older songs coming out of my teenage daughters room (unfortunately no U2 yet).

Elvis,  Roy Orbison,  yes on both accounts.  I liked the Beatles as a kid because their cartoons were on TV.  After Lennon was shot i eventually got some of his albums even though they were probably heavy for a pre teen.  Liked Bowie because of his new wave stuff in the early 80s even though i wasn't familiar with the older stuff.  To this day i love Elvis gospel music more than his original songs.

In other news I listened to Bill Maher's Club Random podcast last week with William H Macy as his guest.   You might enjoy it, he was very good.  I think that's him in your avatar?

Yes, my avatar is him in Boogie Nights, just after he finds his wife screwing around for the 100th time.  New years eve 1980.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought it was a picture of some guy who had to listen to 12 straight hours of Radiohead.

It was, but he also caught his wife brazenly fucking around in the back bedroom (for the umpteenth time) at New Year's Eve 1980.
