Unpopular opinion : I think both Paris and Dublin are overrated. But I guess it depends on your criteria.

If you’re into architecture and history, Paris is hard to beat. That said, I found it hard to cope with and I fled the city after living there for 17 years.

I haven’t been to Dublin for 20 years now, but if I went back to Ireland, I’d choose to go explore the countryside rather than stay in the city. I have yet to visit northern Ireland.

In both France and Ireland, the countryside is far more interesting. The French who live outside of Paris are more friendly, the countryside itself is fantastic, the alps, the cuisine, it's all good. France is awesome, but a lot of Anglophile visitors only ever experience Paris, which is like judging the USA by New York City.

Yes, that’s true. I visited a few regions in France and the French outside Paris are a different breed. But they are far from being an homogeneous group. I can vouch that Canadians are welcomed warmly everywhere.

Dammit. I know all the words (OK, I had to look up cheir), but I know mPare well enough to know that there's some cultural nuance here.

Like when you ask an Irish person if they're voting for such-and-such candidate, they say "Oh, I will, yeah". Which means, "Fuck off, I'd rather walk down O'Connell Street stark naked with a Union Jack stuck to my arse singing "God save the King"

The closest expression in English to our «va chier » in Quebec would be fuck off.

The French would use something like « va te faire foutre ».
