The Who Farewell Tour 2025
« on: May 09, 2025, 08:11:14 AM »
I really find this funny.  Back in, I think it was 1988 or 89, I had tickets to see The Who in Montreal on their Farewell Tour.  The show was cancled due to low ticket sales.

89 wasn’t a farewell tour, itt was a massively successful reunion tour where they played Tommy in full. I highly doubt they cancelled Montreal because of ti jets sales because that was their most successful tour. I was in high school and saw them at BC Place stadium in Vancouver where they sold out 2 shows to over 100,000 people. Sold out 2 stadium shows in Toronto and 5 shows at Giants Stadium.

Oh you may be right about it being a reunion tour.  Low ticket sales was the reason given for the cancellation, but "Who" really knows.

The Who have a pretty thin tour history in Quebec considering they first played Canada 58 years ago. A total of 7 shows in all that time, typically a single show in a hockey arena. No stadium shows at any point. So it is likely they attempted a stadium show on the 1989 tour but had to cancel because they did not sell enough tickets. Sometimes Quebec sort of rejects what the rest of Canada loves. Coldplay has been unable to play stadiums in Quebec as well.

Quebecers are known to be odd. Vancouver is smaller than Montreal and we sold out 2 stadium shows for the 89 tour.

If memory serves, it would have been at the Big "O" (stadium) and not a the Forum (arena) which was still in use in '89.

Wow, tough to believe the who couldn't sell out a farewell tour back in the 80s.
I was a huge Who fan when i was in middle school in the 90's.  Saw them once when they played Quadrophenia from start to finish.  Great show because Billy Idol was one of the characters so i got to see him perform as well.  And... Gary Glitter was also in the show.  In the states i don't think anyone knows him by name (but they play his one song at almost every sporting event) other than headlines of the trouble he's been in.
Is anyone clamoring to see the Who at this point?

Not clamouring but I catch them every time they come through town. Always put on a good show. My buddy text me this morning and we are gonna go.

Hold on people.

Can the full patch and authentic Québécois chip in here?

The Who were staples on rock FM stations in Montreal. I don’t recall what happen exactly in 1989 with that tour. Must have been something else than low tickets sales.

The Big O is the only stadium that can hold large rock concerts, but for the past 10-15 years, it has been rarely used for music. It was in need of some major renovations and that is ongoing right now. It’s the reason Coldplay didn’t come here during their last tour. Lack of a proper venue for their stadium setup.

They would have easily sold 2 nights at the Big O, as they are very popular in the province.

Remember U2 built a temporary stadium in the city for 360, simply because the Big O wasn’t up to their standards.

When renovations are completed (2027 I believe) the city will be able to invite the big acts that do stadiums.
