Was 270 (AKA 360) truly ‘in the round’?
« on: April 11, 2025, 09:25:03 AM »
Wons tells us the industry definition of playing ‘in the round’ is when bands sell tickets for seats BEHIND the stage, and maintains U2’s 270 (AKA 360) tour was, indeed, ‘in the round’.

What do you think? Was it truly a 360 experience or were U2 misleading us once again?

So how did they manage to increase the capacity at the 360 stadiums compared to the normal 'end-stage' config?

Well, it was a round stage. So... yeah.

I’m not saying they didn’t increase capacity with the stage, lollipop. I’m saying U2 mislead us into thinking the tour would offer fans a 360 view, much like the Metallica tour. Difference being, Metallica’s stage was ALWAYS in the MIDDLE of the venue. U2’s was usually at WON end where tickets were often not available

I've just seen loads of pictures of the tour where it was 360 with fans all the way around.

I think you're the one trying to work us from behind, not U2.

Yes, there were seats all around, this is true, but they really spent very little time on the "back" side, I'd say less then 10% did any one member face the "back".  So yes, somewhat 360.

Sure.

But I’ve seen loads of pictures where it wasn’t. If I bought a standing ticket and found I couldn’t walk in a 360 degree around the stage, I’d feel pretty short changed.

The fact the a lot of dates didn’t sell tickets BEHIND the stage is neither here or there except for wons rather dubious claim. The REAL test of a 360 stage is if it’s in the middle of the pitch with a view of the band members at any point in a 360 degree circle a la Metallica.

U2 singularly failed to properly rise to the challenge.

Nope.

In a lot of venues, seats weren’t sold BEHIND the stage.

Nevertheless, I agree, the lyric ‘I’ve been around the front, I’ve been around the back’ from POP can hardly be applied to 270.

I agree that the stage should have been in the centre of the stadium so that fans all the way around got equal face time with the band.  So I guess one could say, like Lovebug's soufflé, they failed to rise to the challenge.

this is not complicated.  each and every show had seats sold all the way around the stadium.  360 degrees around.

that does not mean every seat in every section at every level had an unobstructed sight line.  and no one ever promised or promoted that.

so this notion that it was <360 is ridiculous.

thanks Larry for more unnecessary controversy.

It was not full blown 360, like Metallica, or Arcade Fire in 2018.

But it was nonetheless 360, as some seats were available at the back
