Adolescence - Netflix
« on: March 14, 2025, 07:40:01 PM »
I don't watch much TV and I rarely comment on here about TV programmes - but a mate suggested I watch this...

I did and fuck me, all I can say is Wow - Watch it.

Stunning - absolutely stunning. And it really does hold a mirror up to society and the world our kids are growing up in.

Some articles here to provide a bit of the story etc.

I was in awe of it.

I have a 15 year old lad and it made me think about what he could be seeing online etc even more than I already do. Had a good long talk with Mrs Tha as a result and whilst we think we are in a good place with it all it has served to make us think that little bit more about not necessarily right now but in the coming months and years - especially when he starts getting involved more with girls and all that brings....

This incel culture stuff is quite scary IMO. A teenager could easily google "Why does a girl not like me" or something similar and within no time be watching some piece of shite telling him women are the enemy and filling his head with misogynistic shite and/or someone who may blame, objectify and denigrate women and girls as a result.....Scary stuff. The manosphere and how it can affect teenage minds is frightening.

It is genuinely frightening to think that as we as parents are doing our best to raise decent kids that they can access a world constantly exposing them to misogyny and extremism, violence, and online bullying, shaming etc etc etc not to mention all the lies and misinformation around just about everything that is out there with just a tap on a phone screen.....

I got a 14 year old daughter. I talk to my daughter all the time about interacting online. With the click of a button kids have any type of porn they could imagine, interactions with complete strangers, and access to people giving them information/advice that they shouldn’t be getting. Scary to navigate but we gotta keep talking to them and helping them to understand what they are seeing /hearing.

Aye - it is virtually impossible to know everything they are seeing.

But good communication is definitely the key  - we are very careful to make sure we strike the balance between caring and helping and being the 'police' so to speak.

We also very much encourage him to try and validate stuff he might see - so when for example the far right are spreading lies about things online and stirring up racial/religious etc hate he does not like sadly so many do take it as the truth, but he looks deeper to uncover the truth and see both sides of the story - he can then form an educated opinion on things.

My kids are 26 and 30, and sometimes I feel I dodged a bullet regarding all this online toxicity. Still quite concerning, and I’m very much aware of all that manosphere bullshit growing every year. My son told me one of his former high school friend fell in to it and is now a full Andrew Tate fanboy.

Anyways, thanks for the recommendation An Tha. Will put that on my long list of stuff to watch.

Former mate. My son sees the kind of stuff he shares on line so that’s why he got wind of it.

Point is, you can fall into that trap even after adolescence.

Oh there are grown adults who fall for it all and sadly then behave like animals as a result.....so a developing, confused hormonally changing teenage mind is even more vulnerable.

The programme is an utterly stunning watch. 4 episodes.

Incel/Manosphere stuff really frightens me. It's amazing how many people now have absurd viewpoints on all range of topics, based on algorithms driven by marketing people rather than educators.

The irony is that the manosphere stuff is self-fulfilling. If you think women are the enemy, feminism took things away from you, etc., then you're going to give off the kinds of vibes that turn women off.

It isn't hard to see why some men can't attract women and end up sad, bitter lonely old men.

This article nails it:

https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2025/mar/17/adolescence-netflix-powerful-tv-could-save-lives

This part is really on the money!

We take pains to teach them how to cross roads and not talk to strangers. We rarely teach them how to navigate the internet. There is often a glaring gap between parents’ blissfully ignorant image of their children’s lives and the truth of what they get up to online. We think they’re playing Roblox but they’re actually on Reddit. We think they’re doing homework or innocently texting mates. They are watching pornography or, as DS Frank pithily puts it, “that Andrew Tate shite”.

I watched it last weekend, and had to have a stiff drink when I got to the final episode. After episodes 1 and 2, they led us to believe maybe the son was not guilty, or there was a wider conspiracy, or something. Then, they just took us on the family's emotional roller coaster as they lost their son to a poisonous ideology. It read very much like losing a child to a cult. But it's not a religion, or a communist ideology, it's something new. A new kind of brainwashing.

Im 3/4ers of the way through this show. I blame Tinder and its aglorithms for a lot of the issues between sexes (in general), in this day and age.
Believe me, the damage it has done to society, goes way beyond what you might believe. Quite disturbing really.

People like Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk deserve to be held accountable for divorces, suicides and other negative outcomes of the algorithms on their platforms. For Zuck, I would say a ten year prison term for negligent manslaughter is not out of line. Profits before people and all that
