I know lots of people who love this film. It's probably a 7/10 for me and not very high on my list of QT films. A loose re-make of the Italian war film The Inglorious Bastards (1978), the Bastards themselves aren't featured heavily in this film and feels more like QT is showing off his knowledge of foreign films. The film starts with a great extended opener and ends with a now common trope of QT's of re-writing history. It's been a while since i've seen this one and i really should re-watch soon.
Cast is great. Funny to see Eli Roth the campy director (who i've never met but have many mutual friends with- the art director on my first feature directed a re-make of his Cabin Fever film) in an acting role and loved how his character is set-up as a fearsome fighter and then ends up having a whiny kid voice. Since its release it was revealed that QT actually choked his actress in a close-up quite severely which along with the details of the Uma Thurman car accident on the set of Kill Bill after she expressed she wasn't comfortable doing the stunt herself, has put a tarnish on his reputation. This is one of the QT films i wish was actually longer. With multiple plots and characters, we just need to see more of the actual Basterds in action.
