Acrobat Appreciation Thread
« on: December 29, 2017, 04:20:08 AM »
After scrolling through every single post in Music on this forum, I could not believe there wasn’t an appreciation threat for this song. It’s the stereotypical hardcore U2 fan favorite.

Discuss Acrobat

We've discussed it a lot on the other forum. So we thought it was enough? ;)

It is a nice song  ;D. Its surrounings (UV, Love is Blindness) makes it even better
See through in the sunlight

Very deep, heavy song. True angst. Rage. With a hint of faith under it all to help one hold on.

My second favorite U2 song. I have always loved this song...I remember how much it stood out to me on AB when I first got the album after it was released.
Hold on, people! The man's talking about waste management. That affects the whole damn planet.

This is the song I would throw in the face of every U2 hater.

This is "pissed off" U2, a showcase of all of their strenghts and weaknesses.

Edge's guitar howls, cries and mourns... Bono wanders in despair amid his newly found cynism... Adam and Larry fierily pounding from the back, to support and preventing him from keeling over on the floor... And it builds up, up and up...

"What are we going to do now it's all been said...No new ideas in the house and every book has been read"

...and the solo kicks in... a desperate scream of anger and hopelessness. A moment of absolute bliss. Much more than any words could ever say.

Regardless of what's happened to that band, this song is one of those moments when they were absolutely unattainable and untouchable.

Well, lets be honest here... it's no American Soul or anything...

Even today's songs that try to evoke that anger and angst - i.e. The Blackout - don't even come fucking close.  It's like a completely different band.

You know, just when I think I really like SOE I listen to Acrobat and then an SOE track and just put my hands up "this is all shit".*

*Not really, as I just have trained myself to have tempered expectations for the band at this stage of their career.

Plus there's an actual guitar solo in this song, and it is filthy. A top-5 U2 song for me, easily.
Listen as Hope and Peace try to rhyme,
Listen over marching bands playing out their time.

This song, and the moment the guitar solo hits in particular, is my favourite thing U2 has ever done.

Let's not forget they wrote this song from a position of being safe and snug in their mansions.

Definitely a song for our times.

Top 5, yup. Not sure I want to hear it live 2018-. It is what it is, but it's not what it seems, this screwed up stuff is the stuff of dreams.
