This video is just out. I don?t think I?ve seen someone explaining so well what makes Edge?s approach of the guitar different.
FYI : the guys are trying to understand how Edge came up with the intro riff for ? Wire ?.
I could swear I'd read something about how Edge used felt pads underneath the strings on Wire to achieve whatever the opposite of sustain is called.
(I haven't completely finished the video yet, sorry if that gets mentioned by them)
To be frank, I don?t think they nailed as I don?t think there is a slide guitar on this riff. But the way the are puzzled says it all.
Many musicians underrate Edge because he?s not the most technical player but asked to replicate what he?s doing? they have no clue.
I think they're right: The album version uses a slide (it's reeeeeeeeaally subtle, but you can hear it), and the live version does not. I'm not a guitar player though, so you can take my golden ear with a grain of salt.
I've always thought criticism of Edge as "all he does is use effects" to be moronic. Like when that British comedian did the bit about Edge during a power failure...Ok, you could say the same thing about Jimi Hendrix. Purple Haze wouldn't sound nearly as interesting on an acoustic, and what the hell would Voodoo Child be if the power went out on those pedals? No, all rock and roll guitar must be the billionth iteration on a Delta blues riff, again and again and again, or it isn't "good".
Yeah if it's so easy, go do it.
