« on: August 25, 2024, 06:55:42 PM »
A bit of tweaking & this R&H studio album could have been released -

Desire
Van Diemen's Land
Hawkmoon
Angel
Silver & Gold (new version)
Love Rescue Me

Heartland
When Love...
Watchtower (studio)
God part 2
ISHFWILF - (Gospel)
AIWIY

Would have been compared to TJT. As it was the follow up album.

However if released in 1988 as a quickie follow up don't believe there would be too much comparing.

The narrative could still be paying homage to American icons.

Believe fans would have lapped it up. But don't believe it would have gained JT gravitas.

AIWIY, Angel, Silver & Gold & Love Rescue me are adequate successors to -

WOWY
Trip
Exit
RTSS.

There is not another Streets, Bullet or RHMT. But they would say they are not aiming for a JT part 2.

TJT doesn't need any tweaking and it couldn't have been improved upon.

Had R&H been an all studio album it would have have stood the test of time.  An all studio R&H wouldn't have been a JT 2.0.

Didn't understand the live/studio album idea.

Even pre Youtube it was easy to see old & new live footage of them. They were also releasing a film with lots of live footage.

R&H was huge but received some poor reviews.

Maybe the film getting bad reviews automatically transferred to the album.

Wonder what the album reviews would have been like if the above studio was released.

Personally, I think the entire project was misconceived, rushed and failed to convert JT fans to U2 fans. If they hadn't rushed to make the 1988 Christmas market, they could have ended up with some great stuff in a studio album, and then released a separate live album maybe based on Lovetown 89/90.

I think R&H is perfect the way it is.  Granted i don't love all the live songs but it's a pretty coold album with a mix of the studio and live songs. I remember my older brother and sister each had it on cassette and loved it and neither of them are what i would call u2 fans.

They could have gone for an 89 studio album. Dismissed a film suggestion & just focused on the album.

Have no doubt then they had the talent & motivation to release a rival to TJT.

Then a short 89 tour & 90 live video prior to AB.

Maybe the film was a bit of an ego thing.

Other artists who have released cinema films are The Beatles, Jako & Madonna.

R&H the album is shite. R&H the film is teeth itchingly bad - I remember watching and my toes literally curling.

But at least it all led to Achtung Baby and the decade that followed.
