Vow vs Wow

1995's Vow by Garbage faces off against 2016's Wow by Beck.

Vow

From Garbage's self titled debut album.

This was the first single.

"Vow" was acclaimed by critics. The song took on elements from various styles, including glam rock, punk, and art rock.

The Times described it as "the missing link between Courtney Love and PJ Harvey" while Paul Yates of Q magazine said "Garbage's signature lies in songs like 'Vow', good pop tunes dealt a rough treatment and brazen vocals".

NME had made "Vow" its Single of the Week, writing "Vow" is a shape-shifting squalling epic. It shimmers like Siouxsie's 'Christine'. It's a credit to the band's producing skills that such an ambitious thing is lashed together at all" Melody Maker also named "Vow" as Single of the Week, describing the song as "surreal pop heaven mixed with industrial nightmares" and later saying the song "has classic written all over it". Kerrang! magazine's Paul Rees described "Vow" as "edgy dislocated pop with a sparkling chorus" and "the most brilliant pop song of 1995.

Wow

"Wow" is a song by American musician Beck. It is the second single from his thirteenth studio album Colors. Billboard ranked "Wow" at number 60 on their Billboard's 100 Best Pop Songs of 2016".

Beck dropped this cut as the follow-up to his 2015 single "Dreams." When he first came up with the song, Beck didn't see it as a potential release as it came together so quickly. He recalled to NME: "I was working on another song – maybe 'Dreams' – when I had an idea for a flute beat. I picked up the mic and 'Wow' came out totally spontaneously. I put it away and forgot about it. Then 'Wow' was on in the studio one day and someone said 'You should put this on the record.' I went 'I don't think anybody would like this.'

Usually, I turn in a whole album to my record company when they want a single. But there were a lot of songs in progress, so I sent in a cache of them this time. Nothing happened for months, then suddenly the record company said "We're putting 'Wow' out as a single." I was "Really? 'Wow'? Huh. Well, OK then." 'Wow' was the last song on the cache I'd sent over."
