Build a Setlist as We Go - The Opener
« on: July 23, 2024, 10:47:54 AM »
Here's a new game and it's as easy as ticking a box.

I've chosen three great U2 shows from three legendary tours - Zoo TV, PopMart and Elevation - each with 21 songs in their setlist (excluding cover versions).

Each poll pick a song from the tours' setlists to build a show blended from these three shows.

The shows are:

Zooropa, Dublin RDS, Aug 28 1993
PopMart, Leeds Roundhay Park, Aug 28 1997
Elevation, Manchester Arena, Aug 11 2001 (My Elevation concert)

The following songs feature in more than one setlist:

EBTTRT
UTEOTW
New Year's Day
Pride
Bullet
Streets
WoWY
Mysterious Ways
One
Discotheque
I Will Follow
Desire
Stay
Bad
The Fly

I suspected it might be too complicated for some but then I thought ticking a box can be as satisfying as squeezing  a blackhead, so most folks will.

Doesn't get much cooler that Zoo Station.  It was only a few years ago I realized the true story behind the kids living at Zoo Station in Berlin.  Still trying to find a cheap copy of the famous autobiography written by a young teen girl who lived there as a heroin addict.

Zoo Station is arguably the best opener of their entire career.

I disagree.

Stand By Me leading into Streets on the original Joshua Tree tour beats ZS on ZOOTV. In fact, even though the song is shit, I’d argue elevation on elevation was a better opener. I hate listening to the recorded version, but in the context of that tour, it absolutely rocked.

When Zoo Station opened ZooTV, it was the biggest change in style of their entire career.

POP/OS1 > ATYCLB was the biggest change in style of U2’s entire career.

In your heart, you know you don't mean that.  That OS1 is a U2 album, I mean.

Back to the basics is hardly groundbreaking….  ::)

You used the term ‘change in style’. I’d say U2’s POP/OS1 phase, was radically different in style to ATYCLB.

No one actually thinks OS1 by Passengers is better than anything U2 ever released

I know people praise it on here often, but i think its just an example of people going with an unpopular choice to stand out.  Let's be honest about it- there's two songs on it that are damn good and don't sound like anything U2 had done at that point and the rest is (bad) filler.
It's a cool side-project, but its not a u2 album and its not great.  Its a foot-note that gave us two unexpected gems.
