Suede's "The Wild Ones" versus U2's "One"
« on: July 10, 2024, 03:51:04 PM »
The Suede track is here, for those unfamiliar with it:

"There's nothing wrong with U2. As far as I'm concerned, I've stolen from Larry Mullen's career for years. Without Larry, I wouldn't be able to stomp and sing, it'd be difficult. I mean I owe debts to the Bhundu Boys, Larry Mullen, Stewart Copeland. They're good players, and they're great songwriters" - Gary "Reni" Wren, drummer, The Stone Roses reunion press conference, 18/10/2011

"I'd just like to put on record that that's bobbins" - Ian Brown, singer, ditto

Ditto.

But also, I'd be prepared to argue that that specific Suede track is better than One. I like both songs, they're both great.

One is a little in the same boat as Losing My Religion (the R.E.M. song).  Both have been run into the ground, but if you go many, many years without hearing the song at all, they can sometimes come back to life.

Losing My Religion is in that category; I have not knowingly heard it at all (I do not habitually listen to the radio) in a decade or more... and I think I could come back to it with fresh ears now.

Never heard the Suede track before but didn't like it and what a cheesy video.
I feel like One has now become the forgotten classic.  It was everywhere in the 90s and i think Mtv even listed it as the number 3 song of the decade.  I never hear it and don't think i have in years.  At my work, the 20 and 30 year olds didn't know who u2 were and when i played a few songs they recognized most of them but no one had ever heard One before.

Yeah.

If this were 1994 i would have probably chosen ONE over Wild Ones to be honest.  Of course 30 years later i would be more interested in Suede than U2

If this were 1994 or probably even 2004 I would definitely have chosen One over The Wild Ones....mind you perhaps not the album version of One even back then...some of the live versions are really great though....by contrast the album cut of the Suede track is already perfect. If I were to look at live versions of the track on Youtube I'd probably not like them all that much.

You should probably recommend more Suede songs here.

Cheesy video? I remember the first time I saw that video soon after it was released...I only caught it by accident on some music programme on late night tv - and I really had no time for Suede before that, thought they were massively overrated by the Brit music press....but I thought and still think it was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen. It was the track that got me into Suede, and I stlll think it's the finest thing they've done.

I love Suede. Dog Man Star and Coming Up are absolute classics. One and The Wild Ones are equally brillant.

They are known as "The London Suede" in America.

Suede's commercial success in the United States was limited, and due to a lawsuit with an American singer with the same name, the group had to change its name for the American market to The London Suede.

Don't know if that rings any bells....

Yeah they did tour the US with the Cranberries back in the day but they never took off there.
