I listened to my first Taylor Swift song today after a discussion at work with someone.
A song called "August"
All i can say is meh.
That’s from Folklore, one of her lockdown albums. I did listen to that one a few times when it was released.
I am interested from a cultural perspective as she seems to be a star at the sort of level we saw with people like Michael Jackson in the past, and in a time when it is much, much harder to be a household name because of the way things are now.
But from that albeit very limited exposure to her music, I don't think she is my cup of tea.
Absolutely fascinating on a cultural perspective. You’re right, we haven’t seen something like this since Michael Jackson at the highest point of his career (before he became this weird hermit with Neverland and all). Even Madonna didn’t reach that level of impact worldwide.
You’d think the fanbase is vastly dominated by women, but actually it’s almost a 50/50 split. Obviously, Millennials are the core audience. My 30yo daughter has been a fan for almost 15 years now, she saw her live in MTL in 2015, IIRC.
Oddly, last Xmas she told me she was quitting Tay Tay, because she was getting on her nerves. But go figure, when we were vacationing in London last month, she took a plane to Paris (spur of the moment thing) and went to see her Eras Tour show. Plane, hotel and ticket altogether were half the price it would have cost her to go to see her in Toronto next fall. I said “Weren’t you done with her?” She answered the new album was so good, she had to reconnect….
