Anyone still listening to or going to return to SOS?
« on: May 16, 2024, 07:08:15 PM »
Over a year on from it's release.

Forty songs was a lot to take in. But as with all U2 albums, I found songs I liked and didn't like.

Am considering going back to my favourites on SOS.

Firstly haven't listened to them for over a year. Secondly it makes a change from the originals. A lot of which are decades old.

Will be more relaxed about the songs now. Rather than comparing them to the originals & being upset if they are not as good.

My favourite SOS songs have different qualities I know about or may have missed the first time.

A year on I don't have to go through the offensive stuff to find stuff I like.

I stumbled across 'Streets' from this album the other day. I wasn't into it. So no return. To that tune, at least.

For me, Streets is one of about 10 cringe songs.

I put the songs into categories -

Like it but not as good as the original.

Like it and better than the original but I didn't like the original much.

Fine but not much different to the original. Nothing new.

Don't like it much but at least it's different.

Avoid. For several reasons.

I don't really listen to it. I had a playlist of 10-12 songs from SOS that I thought was ok and listened to it when walking for about 3 months but haven't returned to it since and dont feel any need to. Its just not a very good album as a whole unfortunately, and I dont think it plays to the bands strenghts at all.

I never did the 3 months listen.

Two weeks of listening upon it's release due to the buzz & so I could post my opinion online.

Which is why I may have another listen.

I can enjoy most of the album, when i listen to it. its good to put on as background music. The only tune now, that i struggle with, is the god awful, cringeworthy, re-written WALK ON.
I can say, that to me, as big a fan as i am of u2, some of Bonos more modern lyrics are real bad. The re-written lyrics on SOS are far inferior as to what went before
In the garden I was playing the tart
I kissed your lips and broke your heart
You
You were acting like it was the end of the world

Understand the Pride mini lyric change. But the rest didn't work.

I think they should have literally entitled the record just that: SOS.  A cry for help.
You're doing it, Gal.  Yes Grosvenor, yes Roundtree, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!

Maybe they should have done a 80 - 2000 re imagine. Focus on getting together 20 strong songs.

A 2000 - now could be done a few years later.

I really liked some of the songs but they overdid it.  Just wish Bono could've released his book without trying to make a huge spectacle of it with a 40 track 'album' and speaking tour.

Haven’t listened to it on purpose since my review.

A song pops up sometimes when I’m on shuffle and I don’t mind, but I really don’t need to revisit it.
A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...

Just wish Bono could've ______ without trying to make a huge spectacle of it.

Just fill in the blank.  He can't talk about farting without making it a treatise on world peace or whatever the fuck he feels like pontificating on at any given moment.

I know, I remember Bono giving a speech about it before One during the Vertigo Tour.
Listen as Hope and Peace try to rhyme,
Listen over marching bands playing out their time.
