The next album’s sound
« on: May 03, 2024, 04:59:48 PM »
So, in all seriously let’s say U2 actually release an album of new material before the end of 2025.

What do you think it will sound like?

At this point in their career with no focus on relevance what should it sound like?

My answers?
Probably a lot like SOE but perhaps rockier closer to Bomb. Yuk. I know.

Something perhaps less rock focussed, maybe take a few interesting tracks with non traditional arrangements. Bono crooning rather than shouting. Letting the instruments breathe. I dunno anything that isn’t Dad Rock. Don’t aim to tour it.

I would LOVE something a bit ambient and avante garde, kinda like what NLOTH was supposed to sound like. Songs in the vein of Being Born, TGBHF, Stateless, MOS, SLABT, etc.

But we won't get that. We'll get more of The Miracle, GOOYOW, and The Blackout.
Listen as Hope and Peace try to rhyme,
Listen over marching bands playing out their time.

I'm thinking will finally get Songs Of Ascent, which will consist of 10 to 12 songs similar to Mercy and Winter, as well as final definitive versions of both those songs.

Mmmhhh… my guess is that the Sphere shows only fed U2’s appetite for gigantism.

I’m also fairly sure they want to tour stadiums next, so… the next album will have to fit that desire AND business model, i/e sell stadium tickets.

So… Atomic Bomb part II it is, most likely.
A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...

I don't want the sound to be 'unreasonable'.

If it's similar to SOI & SOE, that is fine. At least it is focused.

They got caught between experimentation & mainstream for NLOTH. Doing that again over 15 years later is a terrifying thought.

It depends on the producers. I would like it to be something between AB - Zooropa - Pop. But those are probably wet dreams.

I would settle for that.

But would prefer another JT.

My hope is something in the region of OS1 vs AB. A kind of futuristic industrial rock hybrid with ambient touches. What we’ll likely get, as others have said, is more HTDAAB vs Coldplay. I remain hopeful, of course, and SOE had many excellent things on it. But everything they have done since has been awful, and I can’t imagine the sphere shows will have helped their sense of artistry.

Since the marriage of U2 and Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois appears to be at least 15 years over at this point, I have low hopes indeed of any work they might do.  Best production partners overboard for half a generation, manager overboard for almost as long, really whos left.  Larrys gone.  Adam will be soon.  Then it will be just Edge and the computer.

Indeed

There is a feeling now that u2 aren’t really a band anymore. That’s not just because Larry sat out the sphere, they just don’t feel like a unit and haven’t since NLOTH. It’s kind of the bono/edge show with billions of producers and engineers rather than a band keeping it real.
