On a mostly dismal record, Heartland is a gem.

I guess I like R&H more than Larry, but yeah Heartland is great.

I might even go so far as to say that Heartland is Bono's finest moment.

AIWIY is most excellent, too, until the string section ruins it. Remove that, and it’s Sinatra or Presley level greatness.

I’ve never heard a thing by Sinatra or Presley as great as AIWIY.

Angel of Harlem. Its a great song that captures the joyful feeling better than any of their many attempts at that in the past 25 years (see: Elevation, Vertigo, Boots, The Miracle etc.)

It wasn’t a like for like comparison. I don’t own records by either artist. I meant AIWIY feels like a timeless classic, to my ears, in the same way Sinatra and Presley are regarded as such. The kind of song that’s always existed. Until that hideous strong section ruins the magic.

On a mostly dismal record, Heartland is a gem.

Disagree with the first part, but completely agree on the second (which is the point!).
Listen as Hope and Peace try to rhyme,
Listen over marching bands playing out their time.

Can’t begin to express how much I love Heartland.

One of Bono’s finest vocals.

Solid work from the production team too. It would have been so easy to ruin this. Glad they left it in the Joshua Tree oven to pick it up later.
A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...

How do you feel about the string section, Martin?

It doesn’t bother me at all. Doesn’t change one thing about my appreciation of the song.

There's some good chunes on this album.

Desire.  I thought it was a strange song to have as a lead single at the time as it's a little short.

The future is bright at Everton FC  8)

I imagine you play this song to your wife on Valentine’s Day and present her with some flowers from the local garage, and a box of milk tray chocolates.
