A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...

Well, there decline into corporate hell seemed to begin around the time PM stopped managing them. Whether those two events are connected, is unclear.

Their artistic decline is more nuanced. For example, HTDAAB is a truly awful album. As is a lot of ATYCLB. And yet SOE has some excellent work on it. As does parts of NLOTH. On the other hand, one has to consider how utterly rubbish Ahimsa, that football song, YSSML and atomic city are. So itís been a patchy ride for their artistry since POP.

Finally, their live performances have gone from bad to worse in my view since, and including, 270.

In sum, therefore, it is difficult to pick an exact point in space and time when the beginning of the end started. That said, I voted for when PM left as he seemed to be a stabilising force for their rampant greed and awful public image.

A gradual decline following the elevation tour. I think ATYCLB was an ok album in its time, but to make it the blueprint for everything in the following 25 years was obviously a bad move from an artistic pov. U2 wanted to be biggest and the music industry was changing for the worse, so they did what they had to in order to stay on top. U2 after 2002 is a parenthesis to U2 before.

I think one could make a case for shortlyy after Pop and Popmart.  The perceived failure of the tour and luke warm reception to the album scared U2 me thinks.

(I very much enjoyed both BTW)

Fair point, well made.

Even so, u2 seem less of a band these days and more like a gigantic money making corporation that will exploit anyone and anything to swell their bank balances. Luckily for Adam, under the circumstances.

Perhaps it was always that way, but since PM left and they got into bed with live nation and apple they have gone into overdrive in this respect.

Iíve felt that Adamís ex wife might be responsible for his glow up. Heís been on point for hair and fashion, and of course he clearly uses his gym equipment.

My guess is that he has enough natural fashion sense to continue the glow up on his own.

Oh, thatís not the topic? Oh well, carry on.

I voted after NLOTH, but to be more specific I think it was a combination of the fact that it took them 5 years to make it, they had what seems to have been a quite avante garde, experimental album, but then they pulled it at the last second to make it more poppy.

Couple that with the 360 Tour not only having nothing to do with the album it was (supposedly) supporting, but it had a completely alternate theme (North Africa versus Space Invaders or some shit).

They shit the bed, and I haven't been able to take them all that seriously ever since.

U2 after 2002 is a parenthesis to U2 before.

Well put. Another way to say it is that everything post-Pop is a footnote to everything from 1980-1997.

Ridiculous thread about a non-existent event.
