Length of ZooTV tour.
« on: April 22, 2024, 12:33:46 AM »
Notice ZooTV went from Feb 92 - Dec 93.

This is 22 months & nearly 160 shows.

TJT tour was only 8 months & just over 100 shows.

Were all the ZooTV shows booked in early 92? Would be optimistic expectly to be able to tour AB for that long. Some big venues needed to be filled. Zooropa would have been needed to give it more juice.

Or were extra dates added mid tour due to popular demand. Or added by U2 themselves as they wanted to promote Zooropa?

There’s a reason Zoo Tv was indoors for the first 2 legs (US & Europe) : they weren’t sure the album was gonna be a hit. There were technical and financial issues with giant screens too.

But by the time the tour started they knew they were gonna size up and hit stadiums. If you listen to a few bootlegs of the arena tour, Bono says they’ll come back soon.

The 1993 shows were already booked before Zooropa became a full on album (not an EP).
Zooropa came out AFTER the tour was announced and booked. Zooropa songs were tested during the tour and made it permanently on the setlist very late, when U2 hit Australia & Japan.

So… all the buzz for Zoo TV came from Achtung Baby, then the tour itself. Zooropa just helped sell the last few tickets.
A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...

Exactly. That’s how it went.

Fun fact: the last leg was dubbed Zoomerang

That’s not what I wrote.

First they planned the arena tour. Sold probably 9-12 months before (spring / summer 1991). Achtung Baby had not been released at the time (November 1991).

The arena tour tickets sold out instantly. The album was a hit. That’s when they cleared the stadium tour, so late 1991. When the arena tour started (February 1992) they knew they were gonna hit stadiums later.

Plus, they didn’t tour between November 1992 and May 1993. They toured 9 months in 1992, 6 months in 1993. That’s 15 months. Their longer tour to date but it happened progressively.

No. The arena tour was February -> June, so 4 months.

According to U2, they broke even on the North American arena leg and took a loss on the European arena leg.

Sorry misread.

Booking 4 months of Arena dates 9-12 months before AB was released.

That is a long time before. Mind you U2 were still huge from the 80's.

Not necessarily. In North America, arenas are quite busy, sometimes having a hockey team and a basketball team using the same venue. Plus all the other artists who also tour at the same time. So I’m not one bit surprised by that 9-12 month gap. It’s probably the norm.

In the United States, tickets went on sell for the first leg Arena tour in February 1992, just a few days before the start of the tour. Tickets for the stadium 2nd leg of the tour in the fall went on sell in late April 1992.

They gradually rolled out the tour to the public as time went on, and shows were completed, and then new ones booked and put on sale.

Never mind the length of the tour, I pity McGuinness having to flog all of those Trabants when the tour ended. But you know who I pity even more? The poor suckers who bought them!!
