Music by decade and generation
« on: April 13, 2024, 12:10:18 PM »
Sorry to attach a meme like a plebe. Just thought it could be interesting to discuss but whatever.

Some thoughts:

Millennials are basically AS LIKELY as Boomers, and more likely than Xers, to rate 50s and prior music as the best. Granted, it’s a bery small slice, but what got that slice into such old music?

Gen Z is different as they have split their love more evenly over the 80s, 90s, 00s, and 10s, without having as strong of a preference toward the expected decade. Also, they feel slightly more connected to the 80s than the 90s.

Millennials prefer the 90s as expected, but I would have expected their second most preferred decade to be 00s rather than 80s.

This is debatable but it looks to me that the Silents and Millennials were the two generations that had the most luck enjoying new music for longer after their respective peaks.

I'm a GenXer and the 90s were my favourite decade. I'd probably rank the 80s lower than the 60s and 70s.

I feel like the 80s are overrated in general.

This forum seems to lean 90s. And I agree.

Full patch GenX here.

For me the 80s were boss. Sent the overrated dinosaur rock of the 70s to oblivion.

The Police, U2, Simple Minds, Talking Heads, Madonna, The Boss, INXS, Prince, New Order, The Smiths, REM, etc, etc, etc….

The 1980s got 114 votes
The 1970s got 106 votes
The 1960s got 89 votes
The 1990s got 72 votes
The 1950s or earlier got 61 votes
The 2000s got 38 votes
The 2010s got 28 votes
The 2020s got 12 votes

The 1980s were definitely the best decade for music overall and it's nice to see that this poll agrees.

Looks like I'm with the Boomers on this one. 20 out of my top 30 albums of all time came out in the '70s, compared to 3/30 in the '60s (all from 1969), 4/30 in the '80s, 1/30 in the '90s, and 2/30 in the '00s.

I'm Gen X and rank the 1960s first, with the 1980s and 1990s joint second.
