U2 & Tears for Fears 1985

Remember reading that in 85 T4F were as big as U2.

I scoffed at that. However they were pretty big in 85. Two number 1's & a top 5 in America. In the UK they had 5 top 5's.

Songs from the Big Chair was a huge seller & Everybody wants to rule the world became an anthem in both 85 & 86.

However they didn't do Live Aid & don't recall them playing big shows.

Four years later Sowing the Seeds of Love made the top 5 in the UK & US. But the album had to be JT standard for them to recapture the mid 80's. A pity it wasn't.

Remember reading for The Seeds of Love album, one song was finished. However one of them didn't like the drumming. So they put a whole new drum track to it.

Edge esq tinkering.

Thinking again U2 were 5 albums & 2 videos  in by 85. They had built up a big live following in both the UK & US. Only thing missing was hits in America.

T4F were considered a bit of a pop band. Although not good looking enough to have teenage girls screaming.

They would have been closer pre Live Aid. T4F really needed to release a great album pre JT. But as with a lot bands that suddenly become big, they took a long time.

TFF were bigger than U2 in 85.

Tear For Fears were playing theaters in 1985. U2 were playing Arenas.

As an album selling and singles artist alone, yes they were bigger. But U2 were one of the top concert ticket sellers of the 1985. Tears For Fears were still getting their feet wet.

Queen, U2 & Simple Minds were around for all of the 80's.

T4F said a quick hello with 2 albums in the mid 80's. Then a quick goodbye in 89.

A pity they couldn't progress. It was all over for SM with Real Life & Freddie sadly passed away.

Not in Europe.

Certainly in North America. They were paid $1.5m in ‘83 to headline the US Festival, a huge amount of money back then. From about 1980 - 1985 VH were the biggest band in North America.

The 80’s in North America was all about having a good time, which VH was all about. Something the uptight Brits know very little of.
