Croke Park. Why the 16 year gap?
« on: March 19, 2024, 04:19:35 PM »
Notice there was a gap between 87 - 2003 where U2 didn't play Croke Park.

They loved playing there. Bono said in 85 Madison Square Gardens was a warm up for Croke Park.

Croke Park would have perfectly suited ZooTV & Popmart.

Suppose nothing wrong with a change.

I vaguely remember something about regulations regarding what time shows had to finish at night. With Ireland being so far north, they had to start outdoor shows in the summer daylight, which interfered with the visuals, and then they were also up against a strict cut-off.

Speaking as an American, most of us have a mental conception of Ireland being more or less on the same latitudes as New York City or Boston, and we tend to be surprised when we see just how far north-shifted European cities are compared to our suppositions.

I don’t know who this would surprise more, Americans or Europeans, but the French Riviera is as far north as Milwaukee.

RDS was a more intimate venue for their Zoo TV homecoming.
The future is bright at Everton FC  8)

Croke Park was redeveloped in the 1990's. Phase 1 was in 1993, so the entire Cusack Stand would have been unavailable. Phase II was supposed to start in 1997, but was moved to 1998. I'm guessing they did Lansdowne Road because they thought Croke Park would be under construction. I'm guessing on the POPMart thing. Not on Zoo TV; Croke Park was not open for business.

Random and rather odd trivia note - did you know that the wife of a former and senior Irish rugby player who is currently on trial for fraud offenses objected to the Lansdowne Road concert because the noise might interfere with her enjoyment of her residence? Fortunately a sensible judge threw her case out.

Talk about karma!

"There's nothing wrong with U2. As far as I'm concerned, I've stolen from Larry Mullen's career for years. Without Larry, I wouldn't be able to stomp and sing, it'd be difficult. I mean I owe debts to the Bhundu Boys, Larry Mullen, Stewart Copeland. They're good players, and they're great songwriters" - Gary "Reni" Wren, drummer, The Stone Roses reunion press conference, 18/10/2011

"I'd just like to put on record that that's bobbins" - Ian Brown, singer, ditto
