Ten date residency at Wembley Stadium - 1987
« on: February 27, 2024, 01:41:43 PM »
Obviously this would have negated Jacko, The Fabs, Freddie & Bruce in one swoop.

TJT tour played to 550,000 people. A combination of stadiums and arena's around the country. Giving the fans a mixture of choice.

There is no doubt they would have sold out 10 nights. This would be amazing & unprecedented even in 2024. In 1987 it would be headline news.

The UK shows were between 2nd June - 8th August. Maybe they may have preferred 10 shows in 20 days in one location. A shorter timespan.

However they did not take up a residency anywhere until 2023. So obviously preferred going to the fans.

Wonder if they regret not making history that would never be eclipsed.

Fantasyland.

If they could have booked 10 nights McGuinness would have done it in a heartbeat.

U2 would have struggled to have sold out three nights at Wembley Stadium.

Disagree with that. Edge when announcing Wembley said they were playing  all over the country.  A mixture of stadiums and arenas.

Obviously fans would have travelled to Wembley Stadium if they had a residency there.

I live in London & would have gone to 2/3 shows rather than the one.

Not then.  In them days many folks never left their village.  Back when fair maidens would dance around the Maypole.

The two Wembley shows sold out instantly. I couldn't get a Saturday ticket.

Another date was added to Croke Park after the first date sold out instantly. Murrayfield, Cardiff Arms Park, Elland Road and Páirc Uí Chaoimh are also big stadiums.

If only U2.com had existed back then you could have had access to presale.  Maybe got a free gift as well.

McGuinness wasn’t an idiot. He would have maxed the total shows he could have. And no, people wouldn’t have come from all over to fill Wembley 10x. U2 draws a massive amount of casuals to their shows who would want to hear With or Without You and Streets. Those people weren’t traveling to see U2, and in 1987 when the majority of their fans were high school/college age they wouldn’t be able to afford to travel.

Genesis did 4 shows at Wembley Stadium in July 87.

They only played 2 other UK shows that year.

U2 focusing on Wembley Stadium Genesis style would have done 10.

Genesis had a much older fan base that had more income to travel, and Genesis had a much longer history and pop hits then U2 at that point.

There were quite a few different artists playing Wembley Stadium in 87. It was becoming more of the norm.

Suspect these shows are booked months in advance. Maybe the stadium only allows a certain amount of summer shows.

U2 couldn't sell tickets until TJT came out. By then the old codgers like Genesis had bagged some dates.

More income to travel?

I'm sure U2 fans in Birmingham, Leeds & Cardiff could afford a train/coach to watch U2 at Wembley Stadium for the first time ever.

Obviously this was a once in a lifetime opportunity. For any artist.

U2 in the 90's & beyond, Jacko, Madonna, Bruce couldn't have made it.

But U2 in 87....

Majority of U2 fans in 1987 were in high school. High school kids typically don’t travel on their own overnight.
