Wembley Arena show 2nd June 1987
« on: February 23, 2024, 01:04:58 PM »
Anyone go?

Was the first 1987 UK show.  Nearly 3 months after TJT release.

Fans would have digested the album & loved it. So would have been a great atmosphere.

Wembley Arena held 10,000. Back then it was considered quite big but still had intimacy.

Heard the stage was in the middle of the arena rather than at one end.

My bible back then Smash Hits said the show was a rollercoaster of rock. Also said one of Edge's guitar strings broke during a song. Edge just laughed.

Wish I had gone although was at Wembley Stadium a few days later.

The configuration dictates the capacity of Wembley Arena. Back in the 80s, a lot of gigs I went to see there were seated in the area we now know as GA standing. Additionally, if u2 did indeed play Ďin the roundí, there would have been even less room on the floor. Therefore, itís very unlikely 10,000 fans saw that show.

Who did you see at Wembley Arena?

I only went there once. Liked it.

Would have liked to have seen the 87 U2 show. Would have made a good contrast from the huge Wembley Stadium.

They played Wembley Arena on TJT tour.

What day were you at the stadium? I was there on the Friday.

Isn't that a mistake? I have a bootleg that was recorded on 12/06/1987 at Wembley Stadium and not in the arena.

Played 12 UK shows. The stadiums were Wembley (twice), PŠirc UŪ Chaoimh, Croke Park (twice), Murrayfield, Elland Road, Cardiff Arms Park. Together with smaller shows such as Wembley Arena.

They could have just taken up residency at Wembley Stadium for 10 shows. Fans would have travelled. But they went to the fans.

Ten shows at Wembley Stadium in 87 would have raised a few eyebrows.

Freddie was chuffed at 2 shows a year earlier. But this was U2 1987.

I instantly tried for the Saturday show but could only get Friday.

It's a strength, especially when you realize that Freddie gave a concert there practically at the end of his career.

LA was 6 years before he died. Queens shows were 5 years before.

The film Bohemian Rhapsody says he knew before Live Aid. Which is wrong.

A quickly sold out 10 shows at Wembley Stadium would have had Freddie, Jacko & Bruce in a spin.

Macca, George & Ringo would be running around like headless chickens in a panic.

Prince played 'in-the-round' there in 1988 and the capacity attendance was 7,700.

I also saw a show there on the front row - dead centre-stage in 1998.
