More info
The 1991 album Achtung Baby is being reissued on Friday in Dolby Atmos format. This new master of the album, is the first time one of the back catalog of albums has been released in that format.
The Dolby Atmos format is a newer one, and is supported by Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Tidal. This new remaster of Achtung Baby was developed in five studios worldwide, and the process took 17 months.
Atmos is a surround sound technology which was developed by Dolby Labs. It uses multiple sound channels to add height to a sound, allowing for a 3D sound for the listener instead of a flat sound. For those who have visited the theatre at Zoo Station in Las Vegas, the films being presented there are being shown with Dolby Atmos sound.
This version of Achtung Baby is a digital only release based on the information known so far. But there are physical formats out there that support Dolby Atmos on blu-ray, so for those who prefer a physical copy, let’s make it known we’d love to see this in a physical format.
Previous U2 releases in Atmos sound include the Songs of Surrender album, and the singles “Atomic City” and “Your Song Saved My Life”. In each case these have been digital releases and not physical releases.
A special preview of the album is being done at the Zoo Station cinema the day ahead of its release. More information about the event happening on Thursday is available here. The album will be presented with remarks from Chris Jenkins, award winning Recording Engineer. (The event now appears to be sold out.)
Jenkins has won Oscars for sound for Out of Africa, The Last of the Mohicans and Mad Max: Fury Road, and was nominated for the films Dick Tracy and Wanted. He also worked on the film Pavarotti, which included a performance of “Miss Sarajevo” by Bono and The Edge, with Brian Eno and Pavarotti. The film was mixed in Dolby Atmos sound.
