October Is Here!
« on: October 01, 2023, 02:19:24 PM »
It's that time of the year again when I find myself spinning October even more than usual. It's been one of my favorite U2 albums for years and it's especially potent during autumn, so today seems as good a day as any to start another October-themed thread.

I don't know that many fans of this record exist here (besides Smee, who I can always count on to show this album some love!) but I wanted to take this month and celebrate the album: the songs, the themes, our personal experiences, and even the bad yet charming album cover. Looking forward to hearing from any of you who adore this record or those who need to dive into it again and see if their opinion has changed.

And if I end up talking to myself...well, that wouldn't be anything new. ;)

Rejoice!

I love October, 1st U2 album I bought, my mate went to see The Police at Gateshead stadium England, Next day he was raving about this Irish band and the singer who was nuts who climbed the scaffolding. Anyway we went straight out and bought the album, super album so energetic and raw....good times

I can confirm i gave October album a few back to back listens today.  An album which has a special place in my heart. A place which no other album inhabits. Loved listening to it. Of course,i do listen to it through they year also, but tend to skip it during summer. That makes me ready for a few listens, come autumn (October 1st) :)

I'm reaching the point where October is surpassing TUF as my favorite album of theirs. It takes me back to when I was first delving further into U2's music, when music was becoming a bigger part of my life. It's just such a comforting listen. I don't listen to it that often any more, but I know every lyric and note. Like the first night's sleep in your own bed after a long time away from home.

What would you know......im listening to October again. Probably going to listen to unforgetable Fire album again, after October. 2 days in a row. Im right in the mood for some great u2 tunes, ones that transport me back to my early to mid teens.

Nice to see some appreciation for this album! I didn’t know so many of us existed, so this is awesome.

October didn’t start out as one of my favorite U2 albums. In fact, I initially rated it as their weakest when I was first going through this discography. I didn’t think it was bad, per se, but it did lack the lyrical and musical muscle that their other albums did. Like many beloved records, it slowly began to sink in and often brought me a lot of comfort in times of distress or uncertainty. I can say that for most of U2’s music, yet October occupies a special place that no other album of theirs quite does. ATYCLB has arguably been with me through the most ups and downs, and I do have a very personal connection to that one as well, but there’s something about October that’s just different. Sure, it’s unpolished musically and lyrically, yet I think that’s what so many of us love about it. It’s that scrappy energy and spur of the moment passion that sees it through.

October is my “don’t panic” album. Whenever I’m struggling with anxiety (which is pretty frequently) or have to make a tough decision, I can put this one on and it just calms me. The fact that I share the band’s faith is certainly a big factor too, as this is their most overtly Christian release. It’s basically a worship album and I love that about it.

In thinking about the themes of the album, I've always felt like NLOTH is the spiritual successor to October.

October is all about singing in the midst of the hurricane, choosing to rejoice and sing praises even as the wind rages and the dark clouds roll in. No Line feels like it's about the morning after, where the sun begins to shine and you've been given a second chance purely by grace. Maybe that's one reason why I love both albums: they feel like two sides of the same coin, even though they're very different musically.

The weather is finally starring to cool down here, which makes listening to the album finally match the season. ;D
