SOE Deluxe CD Packaging Question
« on: December 12, 2017, 03:29:01 PM »
So, I got two of the regular cd's "free" for buying two tickets. That "free" really slays me, but anyway...
We're out running errands today, and my guy steered me over to the music department in a local Walmart...the only Deluxe SOE version we could find was in crappy-ass cardboard case, not a jewel case. This can't be right!
Went to another store, a Best Buy, where they usually have everything available. No deluxe versions at all.
I KNOW there has to be a version with a jewel case packaging...right? I wasn't about to spend money on that cardboard case...am I wrong?

I per-ordered (and finally received last Friday) the Deluxe from Amazon and it was a cardboard case, not to too dissimilar from the SOI Deluxe which is also cardboard.  I was initially PO'd too for a different reason.  SOE Deluxe only had 1 CD in it and I'm thinking, wait, where is the 2nd CD with the extra tunes?  My much smarter 14 year old said, Dad, they are probablya ll on one CD.  Sure enough that was the case.

Huh. I thought my cardboard deluxe SOI was just because I bought a cheap version. So, it didn't come in a real case at all either?

Well, thanks for the info...I guess I'll spring for the SOE cheap-o cardboard case. I hear it's well worth it.

So, your 14 year old is smarter than his old Dad, huh? Keep him close!

I got the deluxe and had the same reaction ... cardboard gatefold and only one disc.
Bought it from a local record store (some do still exist) in Oxford

Mine was cardboard too.  So you don't like the cardboard gate-fold design?  I kind of like it to the jewel cases which just look beat up after time.

I'm not sure if it's that I don't like it, or if it just seems "cheap" to me...the cardboard.
I do like the gate fold design effect. I just want something that will hold up forever. I use these things a lot!

In my LP deluxe is also a gatefolded cardboard. It's just the same design as the vinyl. I liked it, and was happy that it wasn't a real jewel case. Those always cracks.

My humble opinion is that a carboard looks more like a precious stone. More subtle.

and your humble opinion is much appreciated! I must say, the package was attractive, and I will probably go back and buy it. I wish they had both - cardboard AND jewel case! Oh, I'm so greedy!
I used to buy 2 of every U2 vinyl. One to play, one to save, never to be unwrapped.

Why don't buy the longplay? :)

Sure is hard to read the liner notes due to the bad color contrast from the print to the paper.

I hate digipacks too. They fall apart and never seem to protect or hold the disc. If you want a nice gate-fold design then go for the vinyl. I hate buying a CD and getting a crappy cardboard case but that's the way they're moving. You can replace a jewel case but once the cardboard is damaged you're screwed.

Yeah, I was a little disappointed to discover this. Had I know I was going to get a digipak I might have just bought the regular album version.
Hold on, people! The man's talking about waste management. That affects the whole damn planet.
