Was listening to that song… what a great, great song. It’s so much better than 60% of what ended on ATYCLB… everybody shines on the song : Adam’s bass line is amazing. Bono is subtle, Edge is versatile, Lanois’s steel guitar fit in perfectly, Larry’s outro is what he does best.

How they didn’t include this and Ground beneath her feet on the album is beyond me. That’s probably when their musical radar started showing signs of weakness.
A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...

I’m not a big fan of Stateless but TGBHF and The Hands that Built America are superior songs from that era

Lame lyrics don't usually bug me but the line "There's no sunshine in your sky" just seems so cheap to me. Same with "You're silence searching for a sound" in Mercy. Not that I could do much better, but I have to imagine those were the two easiest lines of lyrics that Bono ever wrote. Stateless has some cool moments though, and it is certainly better than parts of ATYCLB.

Stateless might not be perfect but it’s what U2 should be. A unique song.

I like Levitate as well, but Stateless is better in its rawness.

Stateless is one of those U2 hidden gems only die hard fans know about.

Stateless and Ground Beneath Her Feet show what 2000s U2 could have been.  They could have dropped the 90s irony but kept the alternative vibe instead of going for big stadium pop hits, and it would have been great.

Interesting…

And for those, like me, who didn’t know what the Radio 1 mix of ES was…

The Ground Beneath her Feet appears on the 20th anniversary of ATYCLB and is superior to Stateless,  however both songs are good and that album should have been 12 tracks not 11.

Among the best of the band's post-Pop material. I included in my Man playlist (which is their final album in the alt U2-niverse).
Listen as Hope and Peace try to rhyme,
Listen over marching bands playing out their time.

it was a bonus track when the album initially was released

Im a a huge fan of Stateless. For me, it is right up there as u2s most seductive sounding tune (along with Velvet Dress). The middle 8 in stateless is sublime
In the garden I was playing the tart
I kissed your lips and broke your heart
You
You were acting like it was the end of the world

Listening now,  you can see hints of Velvet Dress and Ground Beneath her Feet in this song.

Ground.

But only in Australia, Japan and the UK.

In North America, only the digital album had Ground, IIRC.
