Edge on backing vocals on Streets
« on: July 28, 2023, 08:17:43 AM »
From Wiki -

Around 2 am, just seven hours before the album was due to Island for mastering, the Edge tried to convince Lillywhite to allow him to add backing vocals to "Where the Streets Have No Name", but he was denied.

Edge tinkering to the end. Or trying to.

Don't worry Edge. We did notice your guitar on the song.

I don't mind Edge's voice. Either as lead or co singer.

Suspect backing vocals on Streets would be fine.

However his guitar was such a big part of the song. Is too much of Edge a bad thing?

He had his way for the single edit. If you listen closely you’ll hear him during the « go there » and « with you ».

A dangerous idea that almost makes sense...

Thanks.

Don't think it enhances the song. Bono's voice more than strong enough to power through those words.

Like Edge's voice.  But working together but seperately doing what they do best - sing/ play guitar on this song suits me.

Was that version on the 80-90 compilation? Didn't notice Edge's voice on it although remember the ending fade out was a nasty surprise.

I must admit, back when the single for Streets came out, i did actually notice The Edge's backing vocals and clearly recall thinking that it enhanced the song. Even as a 16 year old
In the garden I was playing the tart
I kissed your lips and broke your heart
You
You were acting like it was the end of the world

I bought the single but didn't listen to it.

Just bought it for the B sides. Didn't know single edits existed.

LOTS of single edits from U2. Sometimes with very little tweaking here and there.

Haha same. I never listen to the A-Side of any single. Not the point.
Listen as Hope and Peace try to rhyme,
Listen over marching bands playing out their time.

I was surprised when AIWIY was released as a single. Great song but long.

Found out years later it was an edited version.

I mean, his vocals are there in like every live version and do improve the song imo, especially the harmony in the "love, love love" bridge they do.
