Actung Baby full of WGRYWH's

Would it have been huge?

Said before WGRYWH sounded like a left over 80's track.

Or they decided during recording AB to include an 80's esq track.

Either way it sounds uninspired. U2 did not rate it much as it was fifth song and fifth single.

AB would have been full of WGRYWH if they had decided to stay as before.

Simple Minds 'Real Life' was released in 91. Sadly a pale imitation of previous albums. They had gone into auto pilot.

Would an album of 12 WGRYWH's have kept there 1987 JT hugeness?

On the one hand WGRYWH was an 80's esq track. Some 80's fans would have found The Fly & Zoo Station hard.

On the other hand WGRYWH is not as good as there 80's songs.

Well oasis had huge albums with effectively one song on them - so why not......

Yes AB would have been U2's 'Be Here Now', 'Goat's Head Soup' or 'Real Life'.

Fans accepting they are past there creative peak but not feeling alienated as the style was the same.

Fans still flocking to concerts over the next decades for the back catologue & odd new good track.

This is U2. If they had decided to stick with the 80's vibe for AB, there was a chance it would reach the 80's heights.

If not a Bomb, SOI or ATYCLB may have been enough after 3 years.

But needed better than WGRYWH.

I agree.  I'm referring to the album version.

Maybe U2 intially went for more 80's esq songs on AB. These type of songs had served them well.

WGRYWH being one of the first songs recorded.

They then realised there heart was not in that any more & WGRYWH was not as good as there 80's stuff. So they changed direction.

However the song had been completed & put on the finished album.

What is your evidence that they “realized” this?

Sounds like you are ascribing thoughts and feelings to them that are simply shoehorned into your own.

They put the song on the album. They made it a single. They made a music video for it.

EBTTRT, UTEOTW, Acrobat & Light my Way are rockier songs on AB.

However they all blend into the album well.

WGRYWH does stand out as more 80's. Not a problem if it was a NYD, TUF or One Tree Hill.
